My Favorite 360 or so…. J-Pop Songs of All-Time (Vol.1)

Sure you know the feeling, you’ve just completed a massive “best~of” list and then immediately without fail you begin questioning yourself.. did I leave a song out? Should this one or that one be higher? Lower? Or these ten I adore all the same so how can I possibly truly rank them?

And so with this new series here’s my quick criteria:

  • Songs will be presented in no particular order.
  • I must own the actual single or album, not an issue as I always support the artist(s).
  • No Family48 songs will be included, as this series is meant to hopefully turn you onto beloved songs which aren’t of our currently collective awareness. I mean, I need not tell you how awesome this or that AKB48 song is as you already know.
  • The “360 or so” is a very loose number –).

~MY LITTLE LOVER “Mirai boribia”~

MY LITTLE LOVER Topics albumIf George Martin is the fifth Beatle, then Kobayashi Takeshi is the fifth member of Mr.Children… and here to kick off my all-time J-Pop♥ favorites is Kobayashi Takeshi’s brainchild of a group “MY LITTLE LOVER.” Consider Kobayashi~san’s group here as a parallel analogy of Komuro Tetsuya’s inevitable leap from master producer to group member of his immensely popular group’s TRF and GLOBE, both of which peaked with massive hits which remain embedded in the culture of the 90’s scene. And likewise Kobayashi Takeshi’s masterful producing/performing with Mr.Children throughout the years has amassed music of let’s just say, epic proportions as well.

So sure I could’ve begun with MY LITTLE LOVERS debut “Evergreen” album with such mega~songs as “Man & Woman”, however “Mirai boribia” from their “Topics” album is one of those most uniquely memorable songs which tugs at musicianship’s heartstrings as this incredible song merges seamlessly the pop world with lounge styled jazz undertones all the while hinting with a touch of the avant-garde. Every aspect of this song breathes masterful arrangements and musicianship and not to be overwhelmed by any means are Akko’s lovely and most unique vocals, here with profound delicacy and strength she builds to a most euphoric chorus for the ages. =)

MY LITTLE LOVER ARE: Akko (vocals), Fujii Kenji (Guitar) and Kobayashi Takeshi (Keyboards).

Very much looking forward to this course. I understand what you mean by not covering 48 songs. That would be two other courses right there. AKB History 2005-2015, and “48 Sister Groups and Sub-Units”

I know that this is your field, However I would like to develop a course on idol groups of the era from the late eighties/early nineties. I’ll list it as a special topics seminar, so we can bring in idol scholars for guest speaking and discussion.
