Idols unzipped...

Happy Aloha~♥ Friday (*´∀`*) ♪♪!

Tonight’s all about redemption, crushes~♥ and boy! will the emotional and “meanie” tables turn on tonight’s now third episode of HYD~!! And I have just an “inkling” of a feeling that your feelings towards one particular central character who’s been nasty thus far, will begin to gradually and inevitably change….! ^^*

Again I apologize for not having a better translated version of this drama as my box set only includes Japanese subtitles so I needed to borrow this imported set from a friend for its English subtitles which sometimes leave a bit to be desired I know. Still this drama’s so great that I bet it blows right through all of that! ^^*

~Reminiscing an all-time favorite drama series continued…

~Hana yori dango (episode 3)~

(English subtitled)

(note: there is a bit of “EnGrish” happening in the translation where a phrase like “I don’t know” may read something like “I’m don’t know”… however rest assured that the dialogue throughout is completely understandable in its context. Just a tiny hitch in the translation here. ^^*)

So once again I’ll be posting each episode singly, one episode per week every Friday …all 11 episodes here thereby emulating a “live” week to week drama watching experience ^^.

This time I’m going for a drama series which strikes all the highs, lows and in between(s) of one’s heartstrings, however this time anticipate a laugh out loud to cry like crazy “dramedy” where its inevitable spell will cause jaw dropping, your heart thumping and your funny bone tickled to an extreme of at times surreal measures. Now for the IDOL connection we’ve got both guy~candy and girl~candy all covered in the most YUM~♥ imaginable!! For the girls you’ve got ARASHI’s Matsujun and Oguri Shun leading the cast while for the guys it’s all about the main lead of our story played by the uber~adorable Inoue Mao… and yet it’s all about great storytelling, acting and the never to be forgotten experience of the “Hana yori dango” world. And when it comes to drama theme songs, “WISH” stands pretty high atop that special tier and it’s performed by the incomparable ARASHI!!! And trust me, if you’re not already familiar and head over heels with this song, you soon will be after just a couple of episodes or sooner =).

~Spoiler-free synopsis~

Makino Tsukushi is the only poor student at Eitoku Gakuen, a school of the ridiculously rich and privileged that is ruled by “Flower 4” or “F4”… a group of four boys who come from extremely powerful families: Domyoji Tsukasa- the leader and heir to the Domyoji World Finance Group/ Hanazawa Rui- the introverted son of a large company/ Nishikado Sojiro- a “player” who is the heir of a tea ceremony school/ and Mimasaka Akira-a playboy with ties to the underground. If a student gets on “F4’s” bad side, he gets a red notice and is bullied and driven out of school. Makino Tsukushi hopes to pass her days quietly without drawing any attention to herself however one day…

So I got the idea to watch and comment along with each episode before actually publishing each post publicly, as my thoughts/reactions came to me in “real time”, so hopefully this acts like a conversation starter if you reply to any of the comments below and add new ones of your own thoughts if you’d like, as this great drama series rolls along =).

  1. Now we just ended prior with a punch and a most inadvertent kiss! =O And how about a first kiss going that awry. XD It’s hilarious just hearing Tsukasa all in denial of his first kiss with Tsukushi, the girl her claims to “hate”…. or rather the poor girl he claims to “hate” =D.

Heeey! I’m in Japan! Just got done watching this episode. Easily my favorite one so far! Absolutely hysterical, but still somehow made me almost cry with how touching it was too. And that ending!!! He waited like four hours for her??? USO!!!!! USOO!! NANDE??? Just as I said that, Makino said these things too!
This episode took a completely different turn with the dorama. I wasn’t expecting major characters to leave so soon in the show (i.e., Rui and Shizuka). I am sure they will be back, or I am guessing they will be. But now this is getting to be a much, unexpected dorama that I am completely clueless where this will end up. The only issue I have, so far, is that Tsukasa sent out an order for those students to, it seemed, rape Makino, and I am not sure how I could ever like somebody who would think that way, if I were Makino. It’s the only thing that is holding me up from completely falling for this unexpected love twist. Maybe it will all get worked out in the end? I am so excited to see where it’s going to go! I’ll be commenting along with you, but just wanted to say hi and say Arigato for posting this! It’s so much fun to watch this WHILE I’m in Japan! Kind of has a cool feel to it more than it already does. Arigato gozaimasu! Also, complete side note, please when you get a chance, go to my blog and read my Perfume tour experiences. I posted five of them for you to enjoy, if interested. If not, that’s okay too.
      This episode ruled so much!

      • A~h! a drama which can invoke both laughter and tears? See a “dramedy” isn’t such a bad genre right? =) But this drama is much more than just that I promise!!! and I should not have labeled it that way to begin with. And how amazing to be watching a Japanese drama in Japan! I’m positive you’re beyond busy with lots to do and experience and so I’m very touched that you’re still taking the time to watch along with me, as there are certainly much better things to be doing right now. ^^* A whole lot occurs in this episode as you’ve touched upon just now… from character departures and a 180 of emotional change!! I mean I totally didn’t see either coming and in particular how I felt about Tsukasa’s character as a whole went completely side~wards and then I began feeling sad for him, like we’re learning why he’s this way and then seeing his sister instill a want for change and an actual girlfriend he’s respectful of, now that was epic! And that final scene of shock and overwhelming emotions… ♥!

Looking forward to hearing your further thoughts and reactions on this one! Have an awesome time there!~! ^^

  2. Initially I was wondering what sort of feelings Tsukushi would have as the guy she really likes is Rui and well… he um witnessed this first inadvertent kiss. =O Sure he has Shizuka right? Huh? Okay Rui did say that Tsukushi is cute~♥ so that’s a beginning right!

Rui san seems like he can be a great gentlemen, but also a little kid. He has two sides to him you know? I do think he adds so much to the story, which is why I was so amazed he exited the story this fast! Or did he? I wonder if I’ll see him again…

  3. LOL Tsukasa is so cross with Rui, but he’s seems so paper thin at times, I mean I totally got the feeling even the first time I watched this episode that he’s got this rough outer shell and within there somewhere is a much more normal and dare I say caring person?? And well body language often times speaks much louder than words as Tsukasa even as he denies it quickly gives a glance to Tsukushi who’s just passing through the sight of the car’s side window. =)

  4. On this rainy evening it was most eye opening to finally get a firm grasp on the relationship or rather lack thereof of Rui and Shizuka’s one sided love.Sure you totally get that she cares deeply for him but just not in that way which is often what occurs in real life. Now the bombshell her is that an unsuspecting Tsukushi while trying to find shelter from the pouring rain just happens upon them as their one side love affair talk continues in a most open fashion. Feel really sad for Rui as he’s so invested in her an yet it doesn’t appear to be written in their stars. =(

I thought it was really cool how they did this scene, as it shows what kind of good person Makino is at heart. She overheard this conversation and then what does she do? Pleads on her knees for Rui san’s sake to have the girl that he loves stay and not go to France. Amazing.

  5. At the same time how strong of Shizuka to state her personal independence and how she needs and wants to find her way on her own merits and will. I thought it wonderful to see such a strong female character in this light where not even the obvious temptation of wealth could weaken her.

  6. I had to smile so much seeing Tsukushi’s Mom inadvertently plant those seeds of I’ve still got a chance with Rui~♥!! Inoue Mao has the cutest of expressions too! =)

  7. Tsukushi’s little brother is so hilarious with his unbridled joy and euphoria surrounding the happenings around his big sis! And his voice even goes higher and higher amidst all of the excitement of her possibly dating one of the “rich guys!” =)

  8. Those subsequent scenes of Tsukushi carefully and lovingly cleaning the handkerchief Rui handed to her on that fateful night of the party really is so so true about what a girl will do in private when it comes down the guy she’s interested~♥ in!! Back in high school there was this guy I had a secret crush on and at the end of the school year let’s just say that I ended up um with his padlock from his gym locker and well even though I didn’t even know the combination to open it I cherished~* it like it was some sort of gift of love LOL… and yup today i say what in the world?? =O Back then I would stare at it, hold it like it was a part of him xD.

  9. Now Tsukushi’s much more normal than I was with that lock as she’s simply got something which lends to a reason to meet with Rui once again in order to return it and perhaps a conversation starter from there.

  10. Of course Rui’s no where to be found and now learning from the three witches and a swarm of other classmates that Sakura~chan’s gone missing from school ever since her F4 letter day arrived and all of the awful bullying occurred is heartbreaking. =( I still feel a bit unsure about this girl but no one deserves that type of treatment ever.

Ijime is terrible. It doesn’t matter if you are Japanese or American or whatever, nobody deserves that at all. I hate Japanese schools for letting this go on and on like it does. Not very good stuff. But good for this show to approach this subject very boldly like it’s doing.

  11. And I for a moment had forgotten that Sakura is indeed a rich kid and therefore she lives in a mansion of epic size, no where near the castle like specs of Tsukasa’s but nonetheless lush. Haha I wonder how anyone would believe that Tsukushi had accidentally kissed Tsukasa that night had they not been present to witness the wild circumstances and I thought it cute how Sakura reacted to learning that it is true…. hides under her sheets. =P

    • djv124 says:

This part in the episode confused me…I was wondering why Sakurako was not able to deal with what happened to Tsukushi, like why she reacted that way. Jealousy, you said? But why would she be jealous of the guys who are bullying her? I am wondering if there is a deeper plot developing here? Ohhhhhh, can’t wait to find out!

      Like

  12. And boy that LOOK of woah! on Sakurako’s face as Tsukushi is leaving, that I didn’t see coming and now I have to believe that she’s overwhelmed with jealousy? You do to the whole accidentally kissing one of the rich guys. =O

  13. LOL now this is an about face Tsukasa as the music’s all cheery and light hearted in the background as he “coincidentally” has successfully “stalked” and located Tsukushi by blocking her way with his car =D. He’s like a different person! It’s like eh?? who is this suddenly nice guy?? =O And it must be said just how great Inoue Mao’s (Tsukushi’s) facial expressions which say “Huhhhhh?” truly ARE! ^^ Okay he’s still coming off as this conceited guy but his overall tone is much more human wouldn’t you say!

ahhhh, yes, what you said is true, but this is the guy who ordered Makino’s almost rape, you know? I still am having a super hard time liking this guy even a little bit. Though if I don’t think about this, then yes, it’s a very interesting switch to consider for his character up to this point in the story.

  14. I had to crack up seen the awkward Tsukasa trying to make a nice gesture by “offering” or rather tugging Tsukushi’s body in the direction of his car in order to give her a lift to school LOL. It’s like he has no people skills whatsoever and so he doesn’t know how to simply be nice and offer a ride to a girl, albeit most likely Tsukushi would have refused at this moment as their prior history is nothing short of a lot of meanness and shocking meanness!~! =O

  15. Woah! and as I was laughing at the sight of Tsukasa chasing Tsukushi in order to offer her a friendly ride the punch which explains so much has finally arrived!! Remember that flashback Tsukasa had when Tsukushi knocked him a good one at school when he went all barbarian on her beautiful lunch? Well now we learn the source of that punch…. now his sister I never imagined! So cute as Tsukushi initially gets her dukes up for a possible fight LOL! =P

  16. Enter actress Matsushima Nanako and I have to think that somehow the news of her little brother’s not so gentlemanly actions towards Tsukushi/ people in general has gotten to big sis all the way across the ocean. =D This is an amazing moment for Tsukushi as her classmates are all witnesses to their exchange as big sis has got her back! And there it is…. the confirmation that she indeed did learn of Tsukasa’s bad means of treating Tsukushi. How blessed is she!

  18. And while Tsukasa’s Mom remains the Cruella of the business world =O… it was nice to see brother and sister reveal much about their lives and past here. At last a female Tsukasa is naturally respective of =D. He’s sooooooooo in denial!!!!!!!!!!! Tsukasa likes Tsukushi but his barbarian mind cannot fathom how to be normal and kind to her LOL. Makes you wonder how big sis ended up so awesome and Tsukasa became this way….huh well for starters he’s still living with her and her Cruella ways. Hm if not for the distraction of that Shizuka article I have to believe that Tsukasa would have taken up his sister on that whole learning about love offer in order to court Tsukushi like a normal human being. xD

    Like

    • djv124 says:

Ahhh… you just said something in your comment that fixed my perception of Tsukasa… you said he had a “barbarian mind” and “could not fathom how to be normal and kind to her.” It just occurred to me from you saying this that when he ordered Makino’s rape, he didn’t even know what he was really doing! Like, he couldn’t understand that was a crime and something beyond evil, because for him, he is such a barbarian in his thinking, that’s the way of the jungle in his eyes, or something like that! Wow… thank you for saying that. It triggered me to be able to enjoy this a lot more now. I get it. I totally get it. And Tsukasa’s sister we also have to start wondering about in terms of how she has dealt with their mother. This is the part of the show that builds up these characters enough that we can start to root for them, even if they are on the bad side at this moment.
So very, very game of thrones, not even going to lie.

definitely a cool symbolic action. Have to wonder if that’s the whole message of this show, in a way… how stars are just missing each other. But in this case, I would think it was Rui who should be missing that star, not Tsukasa…seems the show suddenly has taken a very, very dramatic twist….Makino liking the main “bad” guy of the show? Yet right now they aren’t seeing the same star? Very omoshiroi!

I was so moved by the selflessness of Tsukushi as she begs Shizuka to stay with Rui…. totally giving up her love of him for herself. And to beg that much…. Tsukushi’s heart is made of pure love for others, always putting others ahead of herself, how can one not adore her so much! Fights for the weaker ones and even sacrifices her chance at love for another. ♥!

I mean Tsukushi was totally and whole heartedly asking for Rui’s sake, even if it meant not having a chance with Rui…. so this was a bit shocking to me, his reaction was so not on the radar at this point. On his side of things it really wasn’t her place to say such things on his behalf as he very well knows his situation and relationship with Shizuka… and yet it was still a glimpse of a cold Rui here. =/

  28. Gosh Rui was there and didn’t properly see Shizuka off? How sad and yet I had to immediately be amused by Tsukushi’s calling him an idiot for doing it =P.

And what a wonderfully redeeming moment as Rui confesses his respect for Tsukushi, I just knew that he wasn’t true to his cold words earlier…. Rui couldn’t be that way and Tsukushi taught him something and during that lesson he’s gotten his courage up. Not sure if a trip to France will work out but nonetheless what an awesome exchange here!!

    • djv124 says:

This whole scene was interesting for a few reasons, but mostly I did like how he ended up telling Makino that he learned something from him. That was cool. Also seeing him and Tsukasa act the way they did towards each other was interesting too. Like we’re seeing that maybe they have a deeper bond that we realize on this show, or better yet, they are both human in this scene in the sense that you can almost forget they are in charge of setting up a program at the school they sometimes attend that involves having kids get beat up horribly. And yeah, Rui not seeing off Shizuka properly.. what was that about? I guess because he’s going to head off to France it makes sense in a way why he did that, but still.
At the same time, I kind of felt Rui leaving for France was like a way to get him off the show so the relationship between Makino and Tsukasa could develop much more smoothly, since it wouldn’t be a love triangle of sorts anymore between Makino and her adoration for Rui and Tsukasa’s obvious liking for Makino. I’m okay with it, since this means Makino has more time to possibly spend teaching Tsukasa some humanity, but then I just wonder if Rui’s story gets bigger, in some way, or is this a real goodbye on the show?

      Like

      • I guess for Rui, he saw a parting here as being symbolic of a farewell…. something his heart is desperately fighting against and yet I was surprised by his absence too. Mmm mmm mmmm I can’t spoil it!! My lips are sealed =). Tsukasa’s eye opening dialogue and burst of true emotions here were like wonderful fireworks~*~~*!~! ^^* Best dialogue of this drama thus far! I mean we’ve never seen him like this, being true, vulnerable and loving~♥. F4’s bond is powerful. I sooo love that they made up before Rui left. ^^* Tsukushi lit the match and everything else worked out…. and most of all it’s the change or rather perhaps you could say the opening up of Tsukasa which was momentous here.
