Idols unzipped...

~Reminiscing an all-time favorite drama series continued…. and let’s just say that this episode features the gesture heard around the drama world~!

my Long Vacation DVD box set

Long Vacation episode 6 (1)Long Vacation episode 6 (2)Long Vacation episode 6 (4)Long Vacation episode 6 (5)

「ロングバケーション episode 6」

(English subtitled)

So I’ll be posting each episode singly one episode per week every Friday …all 11 episodes here ^^.

And as aforementioned I think “Long Vacation” is the best drama ever written! Stars Kimura Takuya, Yamaguchi Tomoko, Takenouchi Yutaka, Matsu Takako, Ryo, and Inamori Izumi…. not to mention it also has one of the most iconic theme songs of all-time in Kubota Toshinobu’s “La La La Love Song” and if by chance you don’t know it, trust me you’re gonna fall in love w/ it head over heels I promise and even the opening credits remains as one of the very best cast montages!!

So I got the idea to watch and comment along with this episode before actually publishing this post publicly, as my thoughts/ reactions came to me in “real time”, so hopefully this acts like a conversation starter if you reply to any of the comments below and add new ones of your own thoughts if you’d like, as this great episode rolls along =).

  1. Ryokochan’s honesty here I give big thumbs up to, albeit it’s such a sad moment for Sena. Sometimes honesty isn’t easy to come by….OH! and did you notice how much Sena (Kimutaku) looks like he just walked off of a SMAP music video shoot…..his hair!! He’s in full coo~Kimutaku♥ mode!~! Just had to mention….!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! FINALLY!!! YES YES YES YES!!!! Just finished watching this episode. Easily one of the best moments for this show yet at the end! OMG! So so happy right now! Just had to write that before getting into the comments full on tomorrow. I’m super happy right now about Team Sena/Minami! And yes, Ryoko chan’s honesty is incredible here, and the SMAP poster comparison is very valid lol!

  2. The sight of Minami waiting just outside and the immediate look of embarrassment on Sena’s face….so painful =(. And yet how Minami fights through by playing a bit aloof at the situation in order to calm Sena down is downright heartwarming ^^*. Even saying that she’s lost.

    • djv124 says:

Yes, Minami did a great job with really handling a very delicate situation. She really shows her maturity of age here. Completely.

  3. I think the big Pooh in Momochan’s backseat speaks volumes about her! =P However if there were instead a giant pink elephant plushy back there it’d been even funnier, albeit a bit too convenient and they we’d have to cry foul! LOL!

    • djv124 says:

Yeah, loved that. I think the director was probably thinking the same kind of thing. Maybe she picked Pooh up while picking flowers in the forest?

  4. Love how this scene in the car is stretched out like in real time to really show the emotions of the situation, like they could have easily cut right to the dialogue but instead you have these uncomfortable quiet moments in between. It’s unimaginable how much Sena is hurting right now =(. The sharing of a single cigarette also quite symbolic here wouldn’t you say.

    Like

    • djv124 says:

Very symbolic, and very much a sign of the times this show was written in. I also feel that the painful moment here is just one more bonding moment between these two that will make for a great relationship later on, which I think after the end of this episode, seems to be happening!

  5. For the first time we see Sena daydreaming while teaching as his character is so lost right now. And his open honesty about his dreams and current career is revealing just to hear. And he finally declares a want for change! It’s like being jilted has cleared his head so much……now can you identify the song Mimani is singing in the next scene? I won’t tell! You must find it =P.

    • djv124 says:

Yes, definitely a beautiful scene here. And I like the juxtaposition of Minami as well her, and how she gets yet another rejection slip.
The song, if I’m not mistaken, is Acai Sweet Pea, isn’t it? Seiko Matsuda’s smash hit? That was the first thing that popped into my head when I heard it. I think Wasamin covers it in her enka album?

  6. Okay now this is awkward between Sena and Ryokochan now =(…..I really hated that she simply walked away without so much as a single word =/.

  7. NOW this is perhaps revealing?? The same movie as before with Sena and Ryokochan now being seen by Mr.Cameraman and Minami…..and Minami has the very same reaction to the very same scene!! And likewise their date didn’t think much of it or rather he doesn’t even remember it here xD.

    • djv124 says:

Yes, loved the fact that Minami and Sena both found the same scene funny in it. I kind of saw that coming a mile away though, but it was effective character building for sure.

  8. Animal Shinji looking as hot as ever!!!!!! The drink ordering dialogue between siblings is hilarious with even a foot stomp upon brother to end it all =D!

  9. You can really sense with Shinji’s inquiry about Ryokochan that perhaps they’re a possible match…..seems so odd that the “girlfriend” is still present and yet she’s not at all =/. I thought it was sweet that Tetsuya by overhearing of Minami’s hardships….later offered her an assistant job and it’s like he doesn’t really need one so it’s that much more endearing~♥.

    • djv124 says:

I thought it was sweet as well, but seriously, what guy who wants to date a girl hires her as his assistant? I know it SOUNDS like a good idea, but it really isn’t, for oh so many reasons. Never mix work with pleasure, unless you happen to work together with the girl or guy in the first place and that’s how you end up together. But even then, I found what Tetsuya did to come from very good intentions, but in actuality, it’s probably one of the worst moves he could make if he wants to get with her. Case in point: look what happens her first day on the job…he had to go rush off to a dinner with clients when he was just about to take Minami out. It’s the first time that happens, so of course Minami is like, sure whatev, but imagine this happening every week, every month, every year? That would get annoying and heartbreaking really fast. It’s just the power positioning here is now off. I hope the writers exploit this because it’s something that I think would skew this possible dating scenario right off the bat.

  10. The “be yourself, even if you failed 100 interviews you’d still be cute…” thought by Tetsuya was quite magical, even my heart just then skipped a beat! =)

  11. Did you catch that at 16:30….Minami’s expression as it wasn’t a casual one when seeing Sena across the street in the presence of Tetsuya.

    Like

    • djv124 says:

Kind of did…but I think it’s been more and more we’re seeing her look at Sena NOT as casual at all. It’s obvious where she wants this to go… and it’s so well written that it feels completely true and natural to me.

  12. On the roof? On the roof! So great that Minami sees Sena’s movie program their in the trash in his room as it lends to more thoughts. When you feel smallish it lends to that kind of thinking and yet it is poetic. Had to chuckle at Minami’s reveal of how many interviews she’s failed till now and even funnier that she’s determined to not buy their products anymore =D.

I liked Sena’s reaction to when she said she wasn’t going to buy their products…I would’ve said the same, but of course, jokingly. I cracked up so much at this part.

  13. It’s like whomever is down, the other always lifts them up…..between Sena and Minami.

There are seemingly now countless dialogue scenes like these where you get a feeling of warmth and a tiny life lesson in one…..Sena finding an appreciation for witnessing a beautiful sunset while being out and about and how it’s better than just staying inside =D.

  14. Now this basketball scene is pure perfection~*!~! Not only their candid play and enjoyment of each others company~♥ but also the realization of that particular scene in that mutually watched movie and then Minami’s candid comments about marrying Sena in their old age….and hilarious how Sena goes the “youthful” route in choosing his bride to be in old age LOL =D. Men seem to dot that in real life too….? Yup I think it’s very common.

    • djv124 says:

Yeah, not gonna lie, if I had to choose between an older woman and a younger girl, I would choose the younger every time. You go older if you want stability and maturity and a real relationship, and you go younger if you want passion and craziness and just spontaneity galore. Of course, this is not always the case, as the roles of younger and older girls can be reversed in having these traits, but more often than not in my life, it’s been the truth. I have only ever been in a long term relationship with one girl who was older than me, and it was only by a year. All my other girlfriends were younger by at least a year or more. Not saying I robbed the cradle, like Minami suggests Sena is doing, but I just prefer the happy unawareness that youth brings to the relationship table. It’s kawaii in a way that my life is sorely lacking these days.

  15. The marriage proposal there caught me off guard!!!! =O To Shinji? Ehhhh after all that she’s been through and she even suspects his infidelities too. =O It’s difficult to definitively know how to feel about her character, I mean Rumiko’s such a tragic character till now….difficult to fully root for and yet I sympathize with her. I always thought Rumiko should just leave Shinji and yet it’s like no matter what he does or doesn’t do she is unable to…..fushigi ne?

    Like

    • djv124 says:

Yeah, didn’t like Rumiko’s question to marry Shinji, didn’t like how the scene ended and we don’t find out what Shinji says. Maybe that’s for a reason that we’ve yet to see or will see in a future episode, but I just think at this point, Rumiko is getting in the way and is kind of sad here. I mean, she’s beautiful…she doesn’t need Animal Shinji! But she can’t see that, and it’s frustrating for me to watch her not see that. I guess you can’t tell love what to do in the heart, ne?

  17. At about 27:55 when Inamori Izumi introduces herself as “Momochan desu…” with that oh so cute gesture it’s one worth of quite a few rewinds wouldn’t you say~!~! ^^ Now this I didn’t see coming….Ryokochan being perhaps deep in depression =O. And so so ironic that it’s Sena being asked to go help and check on her =/. And yet you wonder…….

    • djv124 says:

Ryoko chan is depressed because of her own feelings and actions, so I don’t feel bad for her in the least. I do feel bad for Sena, who is really exceptional and is trying his best to just find something to hold onto, whether it’s his piano music, or finding somebody to love. And you know…Momochan’s expression there…makes you wonder if The Japanese talento Rola watched this scene and decided to make that Momochan face her own kind of trademark thing? You know who I’m talking about? Watch anything variety with Rola and you’ll see what I’m talking about! She kind of IS Momochan in a way, now that I think about it lol.

  18. BIG BIG props to Sena for going so far and beyond the call of friendship!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To call and yet he was the one whom was dumped! And his asking for their relationship to go back to how it was before was very refreshing…..like that doesn’t happen very often does it whenever feelings are deeply invested, rejected and hurt. I thought it was cool how this particular scene was shot as you first think that public phone is ringing and Sena turns around to look at it, however we see that that ringing was actually Ryokochan’s phone ringing…sort of a cool time lapse between the audio and visuals here. =D

  19. I must also say that for Ryokochan it was redemption….I mean as I earlier remarked I thought it was very bad on her part to just walk away without a word when she and Sena were suddenly upon the same walkway but now you really realize how that was so much guilt on her side of emotions and not just an awkwardness between them. Really an important moment for her character I thought as without it I was beginning to not like her so much….and it’s funny that she didn’t even speak a single word in this entire scene as she just watched the phone in emotional agony and that was all that was needed to say it all.

  21. U~n! whom better than Momochan to speak some sense into Ryokochan! =D Remember when you earlier remarked how you’d think that Ryokochan so wouldn’t get between Shinji and Rumiko had she known of their relationship? Here it comes to light =)….and you were absolutely right! She’s not that type of person. And YET….! Momochan’s pushing! =O

Momochan really came on super strong here. I didn’t expect that. It’s kind of a testimony to Izumi’s acting prowess… like she wants to break out so badly from this somewhat secondary character’s role. Interesting how it sets so many things into motion here though. And I love her honest approach. It’s very true to the soul, wouldn’t you say? And yes…Ryoko chan wants to make that play for Shinji but needs somebody like Momochan to get here there…it was a crazy, unexpected development in the dorama so far. I liked it.

  26. Oh the bad timing…..Momochan doing her best to remedy Ryokochan’s heart by bringing her to Animal Shinji and there’s Sena xD. I mean after what he said to her you know it’s “okay” on his side and yet it’s still an uncomfortable moment, not to mention the presence of Rumiko who’s so invisible at times and in such a sad way.

  27. Okay like how Minami immediately reacts here, it’s like Momochan has no filter and yet at times it’s like she makes the most sense if that makes any sense =). She tells it like it is with tact left to the winds but she always means well. And she talks so loudly LOL. =P

Didn’t catch the slang part at all, I don’t think it translated well through the subtitles. But I’ll take your word for it. I hated seeing these two fight…it broke my heart. I like their relationship so much…but even the closest of friends fight. It’s like a rule of the universe or something that we all must follow.

  29. Sena’s leap of friendship and putting aside all of his feelings is jaw dropping, like you would never imagine him actively trying to get Shinji and Ryokochan together and yet he does it in such dramatic and amazing fashion! To chase after her and initiate everything…..just WOW. And yet the first thing I think of is Rumiko…..it’s like one “good” deed damages one’s reputation of being the good guy. =/

    • djv124 says:

Yeah, super good guy moment from Sena, but totally heartbreaking to watch since we know that Sena really still cares for Ryoko chan in a sense. I thought it was pretty darn mature of him, and I hope karma comes back in a good way to reward him for this good deed. Oh wait..it does, in like five minutes after this, right? He he he.

Okay so he was telling his true feelings too, it’s just that it’s all sooooooo you know mixed up and all, I mean what about Rumiko?! We were having total conflicting feelings on this one…like you’re thinking YAY! but then what about Rumiko?? Huh.

Nah, not rooting for Rumiko right now. I’m rooting for whatever Animal Shinji does. He’s so amazing! And also, Ryoko chan is pretty hot too, so if he does decide to go with the innocent girl he will have to, um, school in the bedroom, that is all kinds of 50 shades of hot, don’t you think? So I’m all for that happening lol.

I liked how they played the LA LA LA love song earlier in this episode as just a piano arrangement. It was really melancholy sounding (anything you convert into a piano song sounds sad, I swear lol), and made me kind of want to tear up a bit. And then when the song came in full force during this ending moment…yeah, it was absolutely riveting, spellbinding, and all kinds of incredible. I really couldn’t even begin to understand the awesomeness of what I’ve been waiting all these episodes to have happen…actually happen! I hope it lasts and the writers don’t pull a quick 180 here the very next episode, or things get weird between them. I think it would be fun to explore them finding each other in this new sense of love based on friendship. And I think it just works too, in so may ways. I was sooo rooting for this moment. Now I want them to last! Ganbatte, team Sena/Minami!!!!

Loved the romantic kiss at the end. Perfect. And I liked the preceding moment when she says she wants to get away and see the ocean and the camera moves slowly to reveal the hoarding in the background. Does the swimsuit photoshoot prepare us for the vacation promised in the title sequence? Once again, Momoko raises a laugh. She’s a great character withs endearing mannerisms. Still weird to see people smoking, especially in a car. I did wonder about the public phone and how thesse are viewed by the Japanese. We still have them over here, although they’re few and far between now, but there’s always that thought of ‘hello friendly viruses’ if you are obliged to use one. Are Japanese people extra bothered by using a public phone? Anyway, thanks again for sharing the drama. Ruri no shima was still on YouTube when I checked recently, so I downloaded the entire series for future viewing.

    • So much had built up to this final scene and the kiss~♡ heard around the drama world!! Such a perfect cliffhanger too as you can’t imagine what happens next. Mmm.. the long vacation reference is much more symbolic in this drama and there are dialogue references made at times which I loved so much. Momo-chan’s character is so much fun and she many times is the voice of reason too. Love her answering machine messages!! Public phones still have a prominence there albeit diminished by our cellphones, easy to find too with their vivid colors. Difficult to say about the germ factor but sanitizing wipes are always the way to go. Wow had no idea that you could dl those videos on YouTube! What a wonderful drama too and one worthy of revisiting. =)
