So I’ll be posting each episode singly one episode per week every Friday …all 11 episodes here ^^.

And as aforementioned I think “Long Vacation” is the best drama ever written! Stars Kimura Takuya, Yamaguchi Tomoko, Takenouchi Yutaka, Matsu Takako, Ryo, and Inamori Izumi…. not to mention it also has one of the most iconic theme songs of all-time in Kubota Toshinobu’s “La La La Love Song” and if by chance you don’t know it, trust me you’re gonna fall in love w/ it head over heels I promise and even the opening credits remains as one of the very best cast montages!!

So I got the idea to watch and comment along with this episode before actually publishing this post publicly, as my thoughts/ reactions came to me in “real time”, so hopefully this acts like a conversation starter if you reply to any of the comments below and add new ones of your own thoughts if you’d like, as this great episode rolls along =).

  1. The camera angles are so perfect here, showing Minami’s facial expressions as Sena finally goes for his love interest in Ryokochan. And yet it ll shrives up so quickly and really this isn’t what one would expect here right? I mean guy finally gets the courage to go after girl and then just backs off as Sena does here? So so heartbreaking and yet what’s amazing and unexpected even more so is how Ryokochan’s the one to step up and say that she’ll stay by Sena’s side. Awkward for sure and yet it’s like okay is this gonna work? However Sena’s body language and particularly his facial expressions here are a bit amiss wouldn’t you say….pretty much he’s in shock =O.

Sorry this took so long to respond to. Had a few crazy days of being sick. I’m all better now. I actually watched this over the weekend, and loved it of course. Anwyay, I agree with you….totally awkward what happens here but at the same time, Sena’s body language says it all, right? Ryokochan is just fuuuuulll of surprises, as we see later in this episode. It’s amazing how she swings from one emotion to the next when it comes to Sena, especially by the end of this episode. All of it…just…I feel like it continues to build and build for a heck of an ending I hope I don’t see coming!

      • Ugh! we’ve had some bugs going around here getting people sick, I’m happy that you’re feeling better~* =). I totally didn’t see Ryokochan taking the initiative here, it was shockingly unexpected.

  2. “(enter love interest’s name)…Soba ni imasu….” some of the most powerful words to be spoken in Japanese culture! =) As it means and implies much more than it literally says ^^.

    • djv124 says:

Soba ni imasu….can you explain this a little more…what is the English translation and why do you say it’s very powerful in Japanese culture? For some reason, I don’t think I’ve quite become familiar with this phrase….

      Like

      • Literally from the outside it’s saying (I’ll) stay by your side, however culturally speaking it holds huge love and emotional interest as what is being implied in a relationship standpoint it’s really saying something more like I’m into you. One would use “Hoshii” as the initiator and is has very much the same strong impact in a dating level relationship.

Thank you for explaining what that phrase meant. Just didn’t catch the cultural relevance. That makes a lot more sense now. Huge thanks!

I totally believe they are siblings in real life. I don’t care what their family registries say….they are related!!! This is just too good and felt all too real. Comedy done right, if you ask me.

Yeah, this episode is definitely fan service for girls who love Sena, both in this dorama and as an actor. He was caught in the love tunnel and for a moment, really seemed younger than his piano students in his behavior.

I do feel sad a bit for Minami here because I am now rooting for her to get with Sena more than ever. I just need it to happen, even if it is a bit Disney.
Oh, and it all depends on the quality of the sexy, you know? The morning after could be a pretty scary affair for a guy as well, depending on the circumstances of the night before, or how good or bad the sex was with the lucky lady. I can say from personal experience that morning afters for me were many times more about anticipation than anything else, as in, I can’t wait for the girl to wake up so we can do it again lol!

      • Ohhh you’ve dropped the Disney happily ever after! =O …. =D. Ah and how do you think this blog got its name? LOL Okay kidding, but hopefully everyone does use protection!! “The morning after…” bit was just a bit of tongue in cheek ^^.

  6. Ohhhhh the car makes its first appearance and it’s yes Momo’s! So cute how Minami says “hurry up..” in English as she had another phrase like that just an episode or so ago =). However…can she actually drive? So so cute how she plays with Sena’s mind here too GOOD! ^^

Minami went on like a huge English speaking spree here. It was so much fun to hear her use English! I loved it. I think she would make an excellent speaker of English if she really tried. Maybe she can speak good English now? Who knows? But it was cute for sure. And seeing the car here introduced a whole other level of plot moving capabilities. Obviously the last scene of this episode is really reliant on the car now entering in as an almost unofficial seventh cast member.

      Like

      • Hmm not sure how good her English is overall but I too got a kick every time she spoke in English to Sena as it was always in this cutesy manner. So funny as she makes pretend she doesn’t know how to operate a car (。ーωー。)笑!

  11. Now I learned years ago that the last place you decide to have an early or first date is at a movie theater xD. No No NO! I mean you don’t get to talk much or else you’ll be bothering other patrons of the theater, really not a date venue. Still what this scene shows is the yet awkwardness between Sena and Ryokochan xD …he wants to show affection but ends up just fumbling about and then making something random up.

    Like

    • djv124 says:

See, for me, a first date would be awesome if it could be a movie I want to see, but I wouldn’t go to the theater. It’s better to watch a movie at home with the girl, so this way we can talk, cuddle, not have to deal with loud patrons, and so on. But Sena here reaching for Ryoko chan’s hand is priceless. We’ve all been there, believe me!

      Like

      • The darkness can be a fumbling situation like when a guy mistakes your boob for something else he claims to have been reaching for xD. U~n in a home atmosphere would be much better and you can even pause to discuss things or another and rewind when necessary =). But if a date were to do an invite to a theater, I’m giving him the look….. !

        Like

        • djv124 says:

I’m glad you feel the same way about movie dates being better at home. I didn’t think about the pause and rewind component of home movie watching on a date though. To me, you pause and discuss movies perhaps on a third or fourth or fifth date? The only reason I say this is because the first date hopefully can get the whole physical attraction thing established, and some of my best dates were started with watching a movie and then letting things get super physical. Some of the best moments I’ve had in “relationships” were doing the whole pause and discuss thing when watching a movie. I hope that makes sense? At the same time, that’s not always the case. I’ve had great first time encounters with girls where all we did was talk for hours and hours and then when we got together, it was more easier to be close physically.
But yeah, maybe going to a movie theater for a first date kind of defeats the purpose of what a first date can do? Unless you’re both the silent types, then it’s perfect lol.

  12. But more importantly and in particular for this drama it’s fascinating here how the movie actually reveals something much much deeper for the coupling of Sena and Ryokochan and how they just don’t seem to fit right =(. Liking different aspects of a movie or having a different reaction to particular character’s actions and scenes seems to be a tiny bit when it comes to relationships and yet it’s most meaningful here and it really echoes even further along. And I feel so badly for Sena that he actually had to eat his own emotions and thoughts here and actually agree with Ryokochan just for fear of not thinking the same way Ech! xD

    • djv124 says:

Yeah, worst date ever applies here for both of them, but it does seem like this is being forced between them, whereas when they first locked eyes together in a kind of romantic sense, the chemistry seemed to be about right. But all it takes is one disagreement and that bubble gets burst really fast, doesn’t it? Or a difference of opinion, in this case. I do think the show is really exceptional for pulling this out for us to see. Like, sure, on paper, Ryokochan and Sena look great together, but in real life…meh, so far, not so much.

I betcha never imagined in your wildest dreams that you’d ever see Minami dressed as a bunny in this drama and proceed to bounce around adorably and now it’s Done! and Done! =) I couldn’t get over the fact that she was even going to change out of said bunny cosplay wardrobe right in front of Sena until he smartly stopped her =D. Sena’s happy…Minami’s down. Minami’s on cloud nine….Sena’s love life is on life support once again…..very intriguing how this part was written I thought! And what of the bunny tail she’s left to Sena….so funny!

    • djv124 says:

Manami in a bunny costume would’ve been the LAST thing I thought I’d see, but not because of the idea of her being in a costume sounds a bit ridiculous. If you think about it, she’s been in costumes a lot throughout this entire show so far. We first saw her in a wedding costume, and then she was doing model costumes, and now she’s sporting a lovely bunny costume. She still has a great body too, given her supposed age in the movie! The bunny costume doesn’t hide much you know? Lol. But also, it is nice to see our two protagonists in the show have a moment where they can just relax and enjoy things that are happening to them, if even for a moment.

      • Haha not just a memorable drama but it’s giving you the unexpected bunny cosplay too =P! Society is so rotten with girls and their age xD, men not treated nearly the same and I guess it’s in part our faults too as there is an attraction to speak of for older men… older wiser and a lot of guys have a knack for aging gracefully and a girl can be attracted to that. Good call on the Minami’s costumes! =D

  17. A sheer bit of irony in Minami’s reaction to Sena suggesting she wants to sleep with this new love interest and before I can get those words out no need to as Sena say it precisely. Sometimes you don’t realize yourself until you’re on the other end of it all. “Sukebe…” a word that needs to be used more often in dramas….it’s always with such a humorous tone well most of the time that is depending on context of course. =)

    • djv124 says:

The interesting thing I found with the english translation of “Sukebe” here was not what I have always heard it used as…as the word “Sukebe” as I’ve heard it used and translated many other times in many other shows is more like a pervert or hentai person. Just a strange little detail there that made me scratch my head how it was used in this instance. It didn’t detract from my enjoyment here at all of course.

      Like

      • In a different context here, but for the most part the way you’ve heard it most frequently would be the norm. There’s this great Ulfuls song where the word “sukebe” is used most amusingly!! And it’s even funnier and ironic when you realize just whom is singing it in an episode in this very drama….

Ah, so it’s another cultural usage of a word I’ve come to only mean kind of one thing all the time (i.e., Sukebe). Arigato for explaining this again. And was somebody singing and using this word? I totally missed this, gomen!

Okay most people don’t have this so readily available…..an honest and very open member of the opposite sex who’s also open to exploring deep into their own gender’s mind in order to read between the lines and say what actually was said in order to help a friend out…you know quite this way. =) It’s not you it’s me means it’s definitely you….and here I’ll call you when I have the time means….well it’s pretty obvious and Minami’s most honest here and I love that.

    Like

  19. Brutally honest that is. And yet as a friend she manages to be encouraging when all is said and done. Here though is the real gem of the conversation I thought, as Sena explains that if it had been Minami instead of Ryokochan he would have not held back on his reactions and thoughts on the movie, whereas with Ryokochan he feels the need to hold back and basically lie! XD Yikes and I had to laugh when Minami quickly chimed back without missing a beat that Sena should hold back with her too with his words LOL =P. This says it all right? Sena feels that he can be totally open and honest with Minami while he so cannot with Ryokochan….the writings right there and he’s too blind to realize it. Too blinded by love that is. =/

    • djv124 says:

Yeah, this was perfectly written. I felt so much electricity watching this scene, knowing that Minami was sending Sena a little bit of a message here that she likes him or could like him, and it went flying directly over his head because he had the love blinders on. I’ve been in that situation when I was younger, where I was really infatuated with a girl, and one of my closest friends who was a female, was there doing the whole Minami bit with me. I eventually ended up doing more with my close friend than the girl I was infatuated with, simply because it felt very familiar and comfortable. I mean, it’s a story as old as time, isn’t it?

Love how they flashed back during Ryokochan’s daydream….so we could all see what all of the fuss at the ramen eatery was about! First time I hear of Ben Folds Five here too. =) Somehow you kinda feel that Shinji and Ryokochan could actually be a match, she’s so reserved and there you have Animal Shinji not at all reserved as a person so their dynamics have that chance. Whereas Sena’s so reserved and Ryokochan’s so reserved so it’s like a stale mate so to speak. =/

This whole scene kind had an off beat to it, like it started good but then got really awkward as it went on and on. I felt bad for Mr. Cameraman more than any of the others though, because he just got thrust into all of the drama going on with everyone there, and he has no idea about it. And what’s more interesting to me above everything else, is how Minami didn’t really give or pay any mind to Mr. Cameraman the whole time, until everyone pretty much was ready to go on their own separate ways. Like…she wasn’t quite ready to declare him as the new love interest in her life, and me and you both can probably guess WHY that is, eh? Because she might have a certain other piano boy on the mind than the pianist they were going to see in concert that night. Hmmmm….

Oh and the sudden phone call from Ryokochan……I had a bad feeling right from this point. =( Minami offering to drive Sena to her home was really a warm gesture all things considered and there’s a wonderfulness about their casual conversation on the way there. Let’s see, Ryokochan is revealed to have been crying on the phone and we know all about that failed Ben Folds Five concert stab at Animal Shinji gone way awry sidewards and all =/ so what could she possibly want to see Sena about? Guilt eating her up? Yup most likely….and yet it’s so suspenseful here because it all seems so sudden and with Sena knowing nothing you wonder if Minami will spill it?? Sena’s too smart though…..he knows something’s up! Heavy reveal here cue dramatic and now beloved background music! And yet love is blind, deaf and dumb never mind….as Sena goes anyway. =/

    • djv124 says:

Oh yeah, totally felt the negative vibe coming on here, though I would say that Sena knows something is up but yet goes anyway because he’s more infatuated with Ryokochan than thinking it thru, you know? Minami could’ve saved him the heartache here, perhaps, but we’ve seen Sena do what he wants to do before actually taking Minami’s advice, in typical, stubborn boy fashion. I thought Ryokochan’s attempt to reach out to Animal Shinji by buying the tickets was somewhat adorable but also kind of a stab to Sena’s back, even if she didn’t mean it like that. But in a way, I can see why she did it too…she felt something more deeper with Animal Shinji, which to me, is a classic case of good girl liking the bad guy. Though Animal Shinji in that flashback wasn’t really bad at all, just…more direct, and not being a coward or shy about what he wanted. I think guys like that have a certain charm to them that make it easy on a girl who wants the same thing as he does but maybe is too afraid to really go after it herself or make the first move. I mean, I have a theory that in life, we ALL want somebody else to make the first move on us. Like with me…when I was in the moment with a girl for the first time, maybe we’re sitting on a couch with the lights low, watching a movie which is really an excuse to have something happen between us, I always tried to prep the girl in question well before this moment ever arrived by telling her or dropping hints to her that if she makes the first move, I’ll make the next five thousand moves. I just need to feel really turned on at first, and then it’s like…UNLEASH THE KRAKEN lol. Seriously though, a girl who kisses me first will get kissed a thousand times as her reward, but more often than not, what usually happens is that I end up being the one to make the first move, and then it’s somehow not as fun? Not complaining though…I was just happy to have any kind of physical connection with a girl back in my dating years….I sorely miss that kind of electricity today.

      • Blind faith they call it! Haha a younger version of myself “may” have been that way too on a much lower key though but soon enough the bad boy thing has nothing to do with forever. Oh yes the Ben Folds Five tickets were a shocking development and so true about the Animal not being so animal~ish after all when we finally see that telling flashback. I mean he’s rotten for neglecting his girlfriend and lying to her and yet he’s not all bad all of the time. I’m conflicted as Takenouchi Yutaka’s way too HOT!~! Ahhhh so your true couch movie watching motives have come out! LOL just kidding =P! MMm….I guess I was always “taught” or rather under the impression of rather it’s just the men whom should make the first move. Hey we have a lot of things going on inside and out which men know nothing about so men need to take that initiative LOL =P. I also hate the notion that a girl’s desperate if she goes after a guy and even more so if she initiates anything physical (-∀-`)。

If the right girl makes the first move, it can be the best thing to happen for me, and I won’t think it’s a desperate move on her part to keep me around or whatever the case may be. I also do enjoy making the first move, since that electrical spark that comes along with making the first move is so much fun and you only get so many of those kinds of moments in a single life lived. But I think I like a girl who just gets what I want and then does what I ask without me asking it, because she read me so well based on everything I’ve told her before we even get to the point of being alone together on a couch, watching a movie. As I mentioned before about the couch watching movie scenario, it’s not always the case that I would want it to become this huge talk fest. I want to know if I’m compatible with somebody enough to seek out a relationship or physical relationship or if this person is strictly going to end up being a friend. And what separates friends from…something more, usually? Touching.
At the same time, you are SOOOOOOO right about how girls got so much more going on with them than I will ever be able to understand or figure out! Biggest life lesson I’ve learned over and over again! So yes, maybe in that sense, I should take the initiative since so much is brewing inside a ladie’s heart!

  27. Okay I was like crying and moved in some totally different emotions during this final scene as Ryokochan finally rejects Sena despite his continued love for her and it’s heartbreaking seeing him embrace her all the while he can’t yet see her expression of turmoil and sadness…..=( and yet he now knows. And then I cried with a heartwarming happiness when Minami suddenly yanked the car’s hand brake and spun Momo’s car to a halt…..YESSSSSS she’s going back because she all too well knows that it will end VERY badly for Sena here. Crying in overwhelming sadness for Sena’s loss of his love of his life and for Ryokochan having to do this and at the same time crying for Minami’s heartfelt going back there for Sena…. a drama episode has never ended so wonderfully dramatic!~! ^^*

Oh and this drama only keeps getting BETTER!! Till next Friday….otanoshimi ne~*! =)

Yeah, I had tears in my eyes at the end too, not even going to lie. I thought was Minami did here was so incredibly awesome and brave of her, especially considering how she had been stood up at the altar not that long ago, and here she is, making a possible new play at love. And then we have Sena getting his heart ripped out by Ryoko chan, who is like a wolf in sheep’s clothing at this point…or is she? She also could be perceived as a girl just trying to find the person who is best for her, and in a way, she’s totally right to tell Sena this isn’t going to work between them…because it’s just too awkward. And it also doesn’t help that she has flip-flopped no less than four times now about how she feels towards Sena in the space of a few episodes. I think Sena can do better than that…and I think the person he can do better with is on her way to come rescue him from his heartbreak.
CLASSIC DRAMA. AND I LOVE IT.

      • Un Ryokochan’s character inflicts so much pain onto Sena albeit I find it difficult to dislike her that way as I also sympathize with her standpoint of not only being naive to love but also how she eventually realizes that it’s not Sena whom gets her heart going passionately. Still Sena’s the one your heart goes out to fully and it’s this awesome jolt of joy when Minami turns the car around as we know that she knows all to well what has happened.

  28. And I apologize so much for any and all typos throughout my commentary here as I’m one a very bad typist, two have a mind going in two directions at once most of the time and three I haven’t done any proofreading after doing these xD.

MB, listen, you NEVER have to apologize to me for the typos okay? I adore you, you know that, and what you’re doing with this weekly posting of what’s turning out to be one of the best doramas I’ve seen in a long, long time, is nothing short of epic awesomeness on your part. But I’m used to your usual awesomeness when it comes to postings, so really, if you have typos in your responses, the last thing I’m even thinking is “This girl can’t type! SCREW THIS! I’M OUTTA HERE!” I mean, really MB? I would never do that to you!
You have given me something really fun to look forward to these past several weeks. And while I’m much more of a binge watcher than a week by week kind of guy, I’m having an absolute blast watching these with you (even if we aren’t able to do this in person together…which bums me out, but I know you have a reason or reasons for not wanting to do this and I accept the situation no matter what). So yeah, no more apologies for typos please, and keep doing what you’re doing, because you really are the best MB, and you should look in the mirror everyday and I hope realize that about yourself. Just simply the best there is :).

Excellent episode! Loved the ending especially, with the dramatic handbrake turn. The Live Aid shirt brought back a few memories, which would have been a decade before this drama. I was in a tent in a field in the Lake District and the concert was on the radio. By my calculations, you would have been too young to remember, or can you? It must have been one of the earliest shows to get a live worldwide broadcast, apart from space missions.
Loved the bunny sequence. Very funny performance. And I really like all those floor-level shots of them taking off/putting on their shoes. It keeps the filming fresh.
Looking forward to the next episode! I was chucked out twice, so may try the WordPress app.

    • Hiya Philip! Again so happy that you’ll be returning to blogging once again and it is most worth it to finish this drama as I cannot recommend it any more than I already have =).

Mmm…. I was most likely sucking my thumb and in diapers when Live Aid happened =P…. still I did learn about it and a friend actually turned me onto a lot of the performances from some amazing all time great artists, so much so that I actually purchased this good sized DVD box set which is just awesome to watch!! U~n so cool that Sena’s wearing that retro cool t-shirt! Makes you wonder where did they find it? Gosh it was broadcast worldwide? That’s incredible and it happened so way back so even more amazing to learn.

It was sooooo momentous how Minami turned the car around in YES!! such dramatic fashion and she really knew that things wouldn’t be going so well for Sena and she really was there to save him in such a sad moment for sure. Hmm that is worrisome? To be ‘chucked’ out of WP? Did you get use of your Mac once again, as using a pc always seems to work best for video playback here, and Firefox still seems to be the way to go for all pages and posts here. This drama is the most memorable I’ve experienced in all of my years of watching dramas and so I just know that you’re so gonna love each and every episode from start to finish, it’ll be one of those dramas that you just don’t want to see end like ever ^^*.
