~Reminiscing an all-time favorite drama series continued….as things are getting really heated when the complications and truths about love begin to boil over in this episode not to mention a further dynamic that you’ll never see coming….~

My Long Vacation DVD box set!! ^^
「ロングバケーション episode 4」
(English subtitled)
So I’ll be posting each episode singly one episode per week every Friday …all 11 episodes here ^^.
And as aforementioned I think “Long Vacation” is the best drama ever written! Stars Kimura Takuya, Yamaguchi Tomoko, Takenouchi Yutaka, Matsu Takako, Ryo, and Inamori Izumi…. not to mention it also has one of the most iconic theme songs of all-time in Kubota Toshinobu’s “La La La Love Song” and if by chance you don’t know it, trust me you’re gonna fall in love w/ it head over heels I promise and even the opening credits remains as one of the very best cast montages!!
So I got the idea to watch and comment along with this episode before actually publishing this post publicly, as my thoughts/ reactions came to me in “real time”, so hopefully this acts like a conversation starter if you reply to any of the comments below and add new ones of your own thoughts if you’d like, as this great episode rolls along =).
Starts with a BANG! Shinji’s staying with Ryokochan was borderline expected and yet it’s still such a shock, I mean guy’s got a girlfriend XD! Funny how he’s regularly and nonchalantly spoken of as being a “wild beast…”, wild sexy beast if you ask me!! But seriously double BANG! here as we catch a glimpse of Shinji going in for a kiss with Ryoko~chan. Have to imagine that Ryokochan doesn’t know of his then infidelity as she’s never known of his girlfriend as of yet and she’s sooooo not the type to go with that if she only knew you have to imagine.
LikeLike
Ryoko chan does come off as innocent, or so she did, until last episode, when I thought, along with everyone else in the story, that she ended up doing it with Animal Shinji. It was kind of refreshing to know that she didn’t, and I was relieved like everyone else when I found out it was just a kiss. Phewww! So she’s innocent after all, and yeah, I agree…she probably wouldn’t have gone along with what Shinji was doing to his girlfriend at the time, but then again, a part of me thinks she wanted to do whatever with him anyway because she’s smart enough to ask if he had a girlfriend, or so I would think? Hmmm…

Ahhhh innocence only runs hot guy deep! That is to say I do wonder if temptation would fight it out with innocence and doing right and just which side of her would have won =). The attraction was so written on her face in that club scene and it really makes you wonder.

It’s unimaginable how Shinji’s torn apart his relationship stemming from his infatuation of Ryokochan =(.

Sena is clearly distraught, but then again, all is fair in love and war. I almost couldn’t sympathize because I felt like Ryoko chan did later in this episode, that he is kind of a coward to not make a move when somebody else was gunning for her, i.e., Animal Shinji. And he couldn’t even kiss her either.
But then again, that’s just Sena, ne? He’s a “receiver type,” as he refers to himself lol. I had to laugh when he said that. To me, being a “receiver” can sometimes be considered “lazy” in a relationship, but again, I know in Sena’s case, he’s just inexperienced at love. It’s ultimately adorable to watch, no matter how much I want to look at it differently lol.

That was a difficult moment for sure where we found ourselves openly talking to the television saying what are you waiting for??! xD Kiss me!!!! oh I meant that girl on the screen you know Ryokochan =). I think you really hit it there with Sena’s personality type!

This episode only hints at the possibility but you really get the impression that this guy’s really into her! And he’s not a bad looking guy either from that standpoint albeit this is a drama and not real life where such things are considered within =P. I mean he stand NO chance against the likes of either Shinji or Sena, but still just saying…!

So so innocent and yet you begin to wonder about Ryokochan just then. Do note the vague language being used here but a lot is being implied!! Loved this scene. Momo chan got some spotlight and shows how she just is who she is and is unapologetic about it. But we know that Momo chan has Minami chan’s back always. So I think it’s good that she was being more straight and to the point. It was really amusing too. And yes…scary how a girl’s mind works when she starts fast forwarding to what she thinks would be the logical conclusion of a single night spent together with a man lol. Of course, a baby pops out 9 months later, right? Too funny.

Little ramen eateries like the one in this show are really the best, ne? Like it’s part of the charm of living in Japan and in particular, Tokyo. I have seen so many of these places, always full of people from all walks of the Japanese universe, and it’s comforting in a way to see so much society in Japan come together like that all in the name of good noodles to be eaten. Of course, I am not a fan of ramen, but that’s only because i haven’t found a kind of ramen I really want to love and enjoy, except those tomato flavored ramens put out years ago when I was a kid that aren’t put out anymore. But if I were to find a good ramen place in Japan, yep…I would be there constantly.

There’s just such a magnetic warmth in these tiny eateries which you will not find in a larger restaurant. Cozy’s the word! So many styles of ramen out there but sometimes a basic and simple ramen may be what you may be looking for =).

Yeah, I most definitely need to find somebody to help me eat some great ramen that avoids offending my picky taste palette when it comes to noodles and such. I hope to one day find it. I really do.

Okay it’s part of the drama, the curry that is but I just had to say! =) It’s directing genius as the crab gets cut dramatically just as the first land mind revelation hits! =O And Sena’s officially “into the fryer” as Ryokochan is expressing some really um personal thoughts which you’d never think to hear in a cozy ramen eatery =O. And Sena’s mind is now fried rice LOL =P! Complete with the dramatic gonging sound….love that! I crack up each and every time I watch this scene! Okay I jumped the gun on the kiss revelation part and how about everyone and I mean everyone’s reaction to Ryokochan’s dramatic “KISS*” OMG!

It’s a great scene that really plays up the reveal about Ryoko chan and animal shinji just kissing and not actually going all the way. Like the whole place breathed a huge collective sigh of relief, myself included. But I thought the best part was when Ryoko chan asked if a kiss meant so little….it was like this huge, powerful blast of being poignant right in the middle of a scene that bordered on slapstick comedy. I was blown away by the comment. I think I was more impressed with that more than I laughed at this scene too. It is funny for sure. Definitely. But Ryoko chan is right…a kiss IS important, ne?

Everyone’s mind was so far into the gutter that no one stopped to consider a simple and yet not so simple kiss….Ryokochan’s direct question was like a thunder strike even with her soft delivery and it says a lot about those perceptions abound and how we often times worry for the worst. It was like a drinking party at first reaction, so funny! =)

Well, I wouldn’t say my mind was in the gutter, but more like just thinking Ryoko chan ended up having vanilla style sex with Animal Shinji, if anything. I couldn’t imagine her letting loose for her first time, if in fact that would’ve been her first time and all. But a kiss was even more in line with, I guess, her whole innocent, demure personality. So all is well. It did take me by surprise, and it was good writing for this show for sure.

Now the beauty of this comedic and most revealing scene doesn’t fully flourish until Ryokochan straight up asks if Sena likes her. =O My jaw dropped instantly. How he’s been so aloof himself around her and so nervous that he didn’t even call their first date a date xD and who could blame her for not knowing. The direct and open nature of the dialogue here from Ryokochan was such the opposite of what I’d grown accustomed to in Japanese dramas until this scene, I mean culturally we’re indirect in our ways and even how our language is spoken…it’s like a sign of respect towards others and yet sometimes you just want the straight up truth to be said as graphically as possible =P. Okay no graphically but you knew what I meant right! =)
LikeLike
I didn’t expect the innocent and respectful Ryoko chan to just come straight out and ask Sena if he liked her. It was great though how he responded pretty fast, asking her how she could not notice his interest. And I agree with Sena, he kind of made it obvious with his awkwardness around her and trying to be near her. I love how she calls him senpai too…it’s kind of hot in a way. I would love to be a senpai to a beautiful Japanese piano girl. I mean, you can do all kinds of things in a senpai/kouhai relationship in the bedroom lol…
Sorry, sorry, mind is going in the wrong direction there lol. I do think the whole Japanese way of avoiding confrontation and being indirect in conversation is both really cool and also really difficult sometimes to deal with. I’m American..we say whatever we want whenever we want usually, and so it’s a definite clash of cultures that I’ve had when living in Japan, at times. Nothing that can’t be resolved with a lot of bowing and “sumimasens” though.

Ahuh and there’s the gutter LOL just kidding =P!! Un I was originally brought up that way too, not as strictly as one would have been raised in Japan but with many of those values instilled inside me from my parents and grandparents. Some of the best dialogue of this episode right here.

Momo the flirt~♥! So cute! And the continued conversation between Minami and Ryokochan shines a big huge positive on Minami as she’s so sticking up for him, trying to get them together for another chance =). And once again I was blown away by how direct Ryokochan is here as she directly asks if Sena is “better” than Shinji….! =O…. =).
And then the “am I popular?” question by Ryokochan. Now that never happens in Japanese dramas in this context right? LOL and that’s why this one’s a cut above, for even these tiny bits of dialogue create this masterpiece of a drama so much and it’s only going to get BETTER.

Yeah, kind of crazy to hear Ryoko chan ask such direct questions…but maybe there’s a lot more to Ryoko chan that we’re seeing. In a way, it’s interesting how the story has suddenly really shifted from Minami chan to Ryoko chan as the center of attention for the time being. I wonder how long that will last though? Knowing Minami chan so far, I would guess not for long…

I don’t know about you but from the very first notes of the background music when the date scene begins and Sena comes running up with their drinks….it’s like a bad omen of sorts =(. Ryokochan actually looks depressed and when you consider everything and how she was so excited to meet the Animal brother it all makes sense internally what must be going on inside her heart. =( Poor Sena though, he’s really trying and yet Ryokochan’s words here are somewhat like a bomb hitting harder than our usual landmines until now….as quietly as she delivers them to say that “the piano exists for those people who speak roughly and say stylish things and aren’t trusted….” Sena’s facial expression speaks a thousand thoughts and emotions even before he actually speaks.

I didn’t really understand this part. It was really kind of confusing to me who Ryoko chan was referring to…herself, Sena, Animal Shinji? All three play the piano…all three seem to not have the ability to say too much, which is what I gathered she meant by saying what she did about speaking roughly….I dunno. Kind of confusing. I also thought Sena just coming right out and saying they should probably kiss was kind of boyish to the max, but Ryoko chan closed her eyes and was going to let him do it. I don’t know how Sena thought she wouldn’t want to kiss him when she seemed more than willing. He could’ve broken through that first, difficult moment of being physical with each other and made it a good time. He didn’t, and I agree with Ryoko chan…he’s a coward in this scene. Still, the fact she said it out loud…I agree with you…OUCH!

In an irony of ways Ryokochan’s words are taken by Sena as being meant towards himself, implied surely but ironic as the true Sena isn’t this persona at all as we know it. Talk about sledgehammering a guy and when he’s already down…Ryokochan really reveals a lot of herself here too with her words as they’re precise and aimed, albeit not direct in a naming sense.

The “dont worry be happy” sign can’t help but remind you of that great song by Bobby Mcferrin was it? I don’t know quite how his name is spelt but it’s a fun song! Our first really dramatic roof top happening…..Sena admitting that he didn’t feel the kiss vibe coming back at him from Ryokochan was a bit shocking. I initially thought that she just chickened out of the moment but then you begin to realize how much she means to him and how he’d never go through with it if he ever thought her heart wasn’t it it like his. I mean usually guys just kiss you whether you want it or not LOL….=P! Minami at her cheering up best here ♥.

I get the sense you are a lightweight with drinking? I suppose I am too, but then again, it all depends on what I’m drinking. For me, Bud Light I can down easily, but give me a girlie drink like a Long Island and about two of those and I’m down for the count lol. Thre bottles of wine is nuts, but only in doramas does that happen. Three bottles of wine and I’m pretty sure Sena would be in the hospital too lol. Or really sick.

Ohhhh Long Island Ice Teas are a surefire way to get pregnant or at least lose one’s virginity or the like xD! I’ve had a long self imposed ban on that one!! Sure it’s sweet but oh so dangerous. I’m a red wine girl, merlot or a cab but no white wine for me, not into the sweet drinks anymore. Sake occasionally but very little warm or chilled are both good but no I cannot drink too many of anything, my friends say it’s about my body weight and the lack of it =P which makes me vulnerable.

Red wine is pretty oishi, but at the same time, I think it has to be a really sweet kind of red wine? Like bitter red wine just gets annoying to drink for me, but sweet reds are the best. Long Islands are always a good time, but you’re right, they lead to all kinds of nasty business if you’re not careful lol. Too funny how you worded that, btw.
Sake, strangely enough, I’ve never drank. I dunno why that is, when I can just go down the street to Mitsuwa and buy all the sake I want. I guess for me I’m more of a beer drinker. Bud Light, Asahi, or really nice premium malt beers are what I prefer instead of hard drinks. Just like to enjoy the feeling of being buzzed and not the madness that comes with being totally obliterated. Been there, done that, my body says no thank you!

Easily my favorite scene in the entire show so far. The way Minami chan looked when she was getting hugged by Sena….she felt something there. Even if Sena was oblivious to her feelings in that moment…we saw Minami chan suddenly realize she might have Mr. Right sitting in front of her. But she seemed to push that thought out of her head pretty fast, or she tried to at least. It comes back at the end when she’s watching Sena put the moves on Ryoko chan on the street…the same moves she had him practice here with her. I can tell she wanted those moves to be put on her instead of Ryoko chan. It was heartbreaking and crushing to me, but also….it just reaffirms my theory I have going now that Minami chan and Sena are truly perfect for each other. And it was really beautiful to see them try to play Beethoven together…just, classic, especially when you consider the perhaps unintentional symbolism of picking one of Beethoven’s most beloved and cherished songs….that he wrote when he was just about completely deaf. It’s like Sena and Minami are “deaf” to the voices inside of them trying to tell them to just quit going after other people and realize they were put together on that piano bench for a reason! I hope they listen to their inner voices. I really do.

Oh that is a really deep insight you’ve discovered here! =D I love that analogy of thought with this piano piece and their current situation. And how a seemingly innocent acting out can become something genuinely emotional, yes Minami’s facial expression spoke a zillion words just then! Now this is how you end an episode of greatness!!! Sena’s dash to catch up with Ryokochan!!!! Minami’s face also speaks a lot of emotions as she watches from the rooftop…..like she’s losing Sena =(. But what of Mr. Dodge ball cameraman guy right? And you have to definitely say that Ryokochan wasn’t showing any love~love emotions towards Sena as he was pouring his heart out just then, not in an excited manner but nonetheless he was saying all of the heavy and right things I thought. So watching Momo chan and Ryoko chan here was kind of like seeing a Manzai special or something. The comedy was a bit too much for the scene, I felt. Not that it was bad by any means, just…over the top, I guess is how I want to put it? But effective nonetheless. I loved how Ryoko chan got the heck out of dodge there when she saw them all talking behind that wall on the rooftop. And Sena in true dorama fashion ran after her and finally grew a pair and used Minami chan’s come on line. I thought though that maybe since he had to use somebody else’s line, it wouldn’t be as powerful or genuine, but he made me believe he was being genuine. I didn’t see Ryoko chan hug him back though, so that was a bit worrisome, but also a bit encouraging. Maybe she thinks this is trying too hard for the both of them, like trying to fit a circle into a square? And best of all, Minami chan has that look in her eyes like she wants Sena now, and I hope she acts on it. She definitely has the advantage being that she lives with Sena, but she has to be careful about it as well…she could screw that up pretty bad if she doesn’t take her own advice and time things just right between them. I am really hooked on this dorama! I hope I don’t have problems next episode with watching the video playback! And thank you again MB. This is tons of fun!

Un they were a bit over silly and overly nosy there for sure xD…Sena needed his space for once and they blew it =O. Sena’s running after Ryokochan was a moment worth cheering for, I mean he finally went for it for real and didn’t let his shyness betray him for once while in the presence of Ryokochan. I imagine the fear of rejection is why some guys are shy that way? For awhile in middle school I thought guys were just not interested but finally I pestered a friend into being honest and I guess guys being “afraid” in that sense is a good thing, not really but it’s like they’re not taking you lightly albeit a guy who hasn’t spoken to you only has the physical to go on. It’s a good thing that guys are born into the role of the ones to ask =)! Un that look on Minami’s face says it all too honestly, you know she has real feelings towards Sena and it’s like he’s slipping away right before her eyes all the while she’s been helping him do so. The one way hug with Ryokochan has many a questions to be answered…and they will very soon! Hey tomorrow is Friday!~! ^^

Ohhhh and I so hope the video playback goes back to working normally again, I’m thinking it”s just this video here as I’ve been testing some others elsewhere and none of them have frozen up so far so that’s a good thing =).

I’m sure it will be fine MB. It was probably just a one time thing. You are always the best when it comes to putting content on your site, and I am sure this soon to be seen next episode of LV will be perfect. Thank you again!

Hi. A lot happened in that episode. Most cringeworthy moment was the awful interview, which was probably how they used to be before legislation came to the rescue. No one would dare say an applicant was too old, even if they were 101. When Minami sends the camera crashing to the floor, what does she say that means ‘sorry’? It didn’t sound like gomen was in there. Thank you again for posting this dorama.

Haha that was such a great scene with Minami at her best despite those awful men! XD Hmmm…. I’d need to go watch again but I’m guessing she may have said something like “warukatta….ne” to say I’m sorry. It’s from the word “warui” to do poorly or badly and in this context and form it’s often heard as an apology. I really should go check but i wanted to guess first =P. So happy you got to watch! Un most eventful episode and I hope it played okay as we’ve been having freezing issues with this one particular episode like it may have a glitch going on from its encoding or WP’s encoding of this file but in any case you got to watch it through! Thank you!
