~Reminiscing an all-time favorite drama series continued….~
「ロングバケーション episode 3」
(English subtitled)
So I’ll be posting each episode singly one episode per week every Friday …all 11 episodes here ^^.
And as aforementioned I think “Long Vacation” is the best drama ever written! Stars Kimura Takuya, Yamaguchi Tomoko, Takenouchi Yutaka, Matsu Takako, Ryo, and Inamori Izumi…. not to mention it also has one of the most iconic theme songs of all-time in Kubota Toshinobu’s “La La La Love Song” and if by chance you don’t know it, trust me you’re gonna fall in love w/ it head over heels I promise and even the opening credits remains as one of the very best cast montages!!
So I got the idea to watch and comment along with this episode before actually publishing this post publicly, as my thoughts/ reactions came to me in “real time”, so hopefully this acts like a conversation starter if you reply to any of the comments below and add new ones of your own thoughts if you’d like, as this great episode rolls along =).
Haha Smap x Smap once featured that game Minami and Momoko are playing at the very beginning of the episode….a leaning tower of something game =). You also get to see a bit more of the idol Izumi character here as she’s headed to lay land mines all over Minami! =O
LikeLike
Heeeey how are you? I watched this episode a few night’s ago, right when you put it up, but haven’t had a chance to actually comment. Gomen ne. Gomen ne. Anyway, never seen the leaning tower game. I think it’s omoshiroi, and I found that Izumi was much more prominent too with her massive land mine destruction statements pointed towards our heroine, Minami.

Kinda takes Jenga to the next level but games like that make me nervous! That scene where they go head to head is hilarious with youth not backing down!~! Her role never really goes anywhere but it’s just fun to see the idol aspect get plugged into this series =).

So the “piano brat” is back in private lessons where Sena has to deal with her extra blunt bratty ways XD. One thing though is the redemption of her character played by Hirosue Ryoko and it’s the stuff of heartwarming wonderfulness!~! The nuances of the piano are on full display here and I love that Sena’s attempting to teach her that there’s so much more than tempo and striking the right notes…feel and emotion as is true of all musical instruments as you can really sense the musician’s heart if he or she is putting their all into to in a true and open way. Hope that makes sense! I felt a Grrrrrrr…..come across as Sena’s attempt at opening up the piano brat is shoved right back @ him and in a most rude and abrupt manner I must say!! =/

I thought the brat was a boy for the first two episodes.

Hirosue Ryoko was sporting that short short cut back then… Haha it was a boyish look. ÷)

Sena really had a chance to make me like him a lot more in this episode, as I thought he was very sweet to the piano brat this entire episode. He rode her all the way home on her bike and then would’ve had to walk home all the way back to his place…I mean, who does that? It was super kind of him, for sure.
I did think, however, that the piano brat story line could’ve been pulled out a few more episodes, or something? I liked where this was going and didn’t want it to end. So far, so good!

Sena’s character does shine through so much in this episode! Really thoughtful what he did here going way beyond what anyone would normally imagine and he does it all so selflessly. So much heart and endearment and ultimately redemption happens here in this mini story, and you’re so right about how they could’ve really lengthened this story line much more, still it really added so much character development and in particular for Sena.

LAND MINE ALERT!!!!! As the sassy young idol Izumi~chan says all of the wrong things and really Minami is just trying to help her with her image xD. No she didn’t?? =O Only bummer is that we don’t get to actually witness Minami’s tirade on her! =( Dropping the grandmother “slang” on a woman is strictly off-limits unless you’re looking to hurt and get into a fight immediately LOL =P!

This part reminded me of some early AKBINGO episodes where some of the younger girls would screw around with the older girls in the group, calling them Baba and such. Too funny!

A~h! it’s one of the LARGEST land mines that could be tossed at a girl for sure! xD Hahah AKBanter….says so much about the short shelf lives of idols but I’d love to see idols’ careers go way beyond the average of mid twenties if only that part of the culture could change albeit most girls by then probably would want to move onward with their lives.

Sometimes a personal opportunity arrives in the most of unlikely of ways as Sena’s bratty student has forgotten her bag. And here I got that OMG SharanQ moment~♥!!!!! Now who doesn’t love SharanQ!!!!!! Tsunku at his finest along with the Hello! Project empire of course!! I miss the 3 inch CD single format which made J-pop until the latter 90’s so so cool! And i didn’t even mind additionally purchasing those jewel cases on top of that you know to make them all pretty and well protected. =)

Had no Idea that SharanQ was real. I thought it was a made up pop group for the purpose of this dorama. Tsunku at his finest, eh? Pretty awesome to hear that.

Oh yes Tsunku/SharanQ was soooooooo awesome!!!!! Their “Single Best 10” remains as one of the essential collections to have and also SharanQ’s live performances were often times legendary! And this all came before there was any Hello! Project to speak of, who then could have known that he’d create the very first true idol empire, just amazing what he’s accomplished as both an artist and songwriter/producer. I’ve featured SharanQ a few times too here in the past. ^^

Ah, you talked about SharanQ before? I’ll have to go back through some of your older posts to see then I guess. Thanks for letting me know!

Drunk karaoke! So funny how Momo~chan continues to jab at Minami’s abilities as here it’s her singing or lack of singing ability put in a most blunt fashion xD. Exaggerated enka….gotta love it!

The water bottle conversation is awesome! Getting ahead of myself there. But first Minami’s drunk antics are the BEST!!!! If only there were a way to become funny and less slutty when drunk, just thinking out loud =).
Momo~chan’s great in this scene too! The adult!

Truly love Minami as a drunk girl…she’s hysterical, unhinged, and completely out of her mind. But in a good way, like she wants to have tons of fun before she returns to the land of sobriety. Just…really one of my favorite moments so far out of the series that I’ve watched up to this point. I think everyone really redeemed themselves for me since the last episode. Not that they needed redeemed, mind you, but I just really was grateful to see them all get along somewhat more, I suppose, and do more for each other. The bonds are growing…..

Truly a hilarious scene as Minami’s drunken personality is off the charts and just those sounds that she’s making here too funny…(^q^)! Interestingly Momo holds her liquor very well for a mind so aloof at times =P and it’s a good thing!!

And there it is. Thy community water bottle is not to be used directly but instead with a separate glass…and it is sooooo cute! Indirect kiss, like that one time that variety show host dude invaded Nacchi’s room early in the morning while she was still fast asleep and then proceeded to drink out of her bottle and then offer it to her when she awoke, yup! they shared and indirect kiss♥ as well =D.
LikeLike
indirect kisses are the best, aren’t they? Lol. When you share them with somebody you want to share them with, I mean. It reminds me of one time when I saw on eBay a bottle water drank by Kumi Koda going for thousands of dollars in bids. Somebody obviously wanted an indirect kiss with Kuu-chan!
LikeLike
That is sooooo wacky awesome!! Truly defines a fan! Sena bringing it up is so amusing and what better reaction than Minami’s here in this scene! Cant’ imagine paying for an indirect kiss from a water bottle =P but weren’t there some highly questionable used items being sold on eBay over the years so I guess there’s always a buyer =),

Of course Sena was speaking to the matter of not sharing potential germs on said water bottle, still the indirect kiss reasoning is much much better!

Here we get a lot more out of the piano brats character…sorry I have to keep calling her that =P. SharanQ CD single!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A huge reveal here and how she downplays it speaks volumes of her inner demons. =( Sena’s really trying here and then to leave the CD single how awful. =( Love that Sena went after her, it’s so much in his DNA to do so as you’ve probably realized by now. Their conversation during the bike ride back to her home is both memorable and deeply touching.

Did you recognize the song Minami’s trying to mimic on the piano before the background music kicked in? I keep saying this but it’s such an important song♥!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And to have it playing in the background as Sena speaks with Takako (aka: piano brat) is so so perfect! This melody you’ll fall in love with if you haven’t already. Sena’s reveal of how he understands music to be during this conversation is hugely ironic as he knows by heart how music should be both played and listened to, and yet his wall surrounds him keeping he himself from that very definition. =/
LikeLike
Yes, the melody is touching, haunting even, on some level. Definitely love it for sure, and it fit well considering Sena knows the exact advice he is giving the piano brat is the advice he should be taking for himself. Definitely amazing work in terms of how this scene just flows supremely well and makes me appreciate Sena a lot more!

It’s such a huge irony and so well written into Sena’s character, got to give the director much love too as these scenes just work together so seamlessly and perfectly always.

Minami finally beginning to get over her marriage failure is wonderful, and the super bouncy ball is back once again if only for a few seconds =). Now that familiar melody has a lyric to it during Minami’s wine “tasting” last call, love how Sena tidy’s up for her and then sees that she had indeed had not one but two glasses out for the both of them to partake together. Sweet~♥.

More Minami awesomeness in this scene, and more kindness by Sena to cover her up…just really ideal in terms of two seemingly lost souls looking for something and maybe creating that ‘something’ between them and not even realizing it. I really can’t wait to see where this is going with them both!

Very endearing scene with our two main leads and it’s these simple gestures in life which mean so much in our collective hearts, makes me feel all warm and cozy inside as Sena and Minami make these simple gestures of kindness =).

Cutting the cord on Minami was so low, not liking her boss very much and really never have =P. And to be fired from mentoring the idol-brat (aka: Izumi~chan =) ) …she’s much cuter in UTB! =D

The awkwardness between Ryoko~chan and Sena is so uncomfortable =(…I can’t imagine wanting someone that much and not being able to be yourself around them or perhaps just not being a match with said love interest =(. I loved that Sena stuck up for his job!! Not being embarrassed and being honest.

They played up the awkwardness rather well in this scene, ne? I completely felt it and was squirmy too.

They say that body language/ our facial expressions can make up the majority of our communication, so much is said here outside of words by both Sena and Ryoko~chan.

Caught the “Long Vacation” reference once again, under much more sad circumstances though. =( So what do you do whenever you’re feeling down? Minami does her nails while Sena organizes his CD collection, so what do you do if anything in particular? I cry and then listen to or watch a favorite album or movie.
The whole second toe conversation is GREAT! Now try it on yourself! You must! Minami gets sooooo happy and excited @ Sena feeling the same thing!~! It truly does feel like the middle….place a finger on the very tip and put a little pressure on your second toe, it’s totally true and I never knew of it until watching this drama. =)

Minami’s middle toe observation is sooooo weird, but it’s also soooooo true. I really couldn’t stop laughing because I was doing it while watching her and Sena do it and thinking to myself, who wrote this show? They are geniuses lol. That was such a fun, crazy little way to bond Sena and Minami a little more closer together.
I think the Long Vacation reference really sunk in as well. Just…very sad given all the things that are happening here to the characters I’m coming to enjoy more now with this new episode. What do I do when I’m sad? I like getting in my car and driving and listening to music at full blast, but since I’m in LA and can’t do that as easily as when I was in PA, now it’s more like I just put on my headphones and write in my blog or something equally as emo. Just…anything to get the hurt out of me. Sometimes it’s not enough though.
This show really makes you feel something. And I’m only a few episodes in. My GOD what will I feel come the final episode lol????

Aha! LOL never knew about this simple toe truth until this drama!! It does make you wonder how in the world did it arrive to paper on the script, it’s just so out there wonderful! Thank you for sharing your go to for such times, we all have them and deal with them so uniquely in life so it’s just interesting to know how others cope. It’s that hugely sad feeling because the drama’s ended and that there’s no more episodes left, and really it’s a big reason for wanting to watch this on a week to week basis as one would if it were being broadcast on t.v., it becomes a part of your weekly life and a routine for lack of a better way of expressing it and when a drama such as this one ends….it’s like losing a best friend. Only the great dramas can do this to you ^^*.

Minami’s reveal of why she believes that she’s never a fit for someone….so sad =(. Sena saving Minami from seeing Asakura’s bride by eating half of the pic comes to light here and it’s extra sweet how he doesn’t even need to verbalize and answer in regards to said bride’s looks…..and an official apology♥ about the ramen/love hotel coupon incident…..and really you don’t imagine that it’s ever going to happen.
LikeLike
Didn’t expect the apology to come, since most shows I swear don’t like to do this. It felt natural and real, like something that would happen in real life between two people when one person who has wronged another person is sharing a good moment with the wronged person afterwards, they then use that opportunity to right that wrong. Happens all the time in my life. So I liked this scene a loooot.

U~n! The author really understands relationships and this drama really makes the viewer that much more endeared as there’s certainly a reality about it all and how these characters and situations unfold. Often times dramas do ignore these dynamics which we all can relate too and we’d simply shrug it off as “this is just a drama…” however here it’s very genuinely written. =)

Good drunk Minami kidding!!! =D Okay all’s well UNTIL oh nooooo!! Animal Shinji and Ryoko~chan’s eyes meeting all at once and you realize that their much more soul mates than Sena could ever be for her =(. “Happy” for them but devastated for Sena =(……the worst second date of all-time. =( And Momo~chan’s commentary isn’t helping!!!!! =O Minami still trying to salvage the date against all odds and reality is endearing and yet you have to remember Animal Shinji’s girlfriend who’s right there watching…..bad bad all around and yet this is the stuff of a drama’s conflict and allure ne~.

I really, really thought Shinji wouldn’t hit it off so well with Ryoko chan, but I guess it’s true about good girls liking bad boys. I felt for Shinji’s girlfriend, but I didn’t even really get that they were together, mostly, due to how free Shinji seemed to act right in front of her. I mean, his girlfriend is very patient with him, it would seem, to allow him to be the way that he is…or very naive.
Still, Momo chan’s commentary had me cracking up. I loved it! That’s my Izumi!!!

Hah! I’ve seen it going even back to high school! I just figure that girls eventually outgrow this attraction or the guys grow out of it, but you never know I guess =P. And yes it was the furthest from my expectations to see Shinji and Ryoko~chan share an attraction to one another, didn’t see this coming!! Sadly his girlfriend appears to be very passive up till now and really in the background as she rarely speaks or does anything really. =/ Just seeing them up there on stage you’d think that she’d run up there and intervene in some manner but of course she doesn’t.

Yamanote Line…..instantly made me think of Tackey & Tsubasa! And you know that they say about guys with long fingers right?? Big gloves!! =P Long fingers though….what an advantage for so many things in life from music to sports and well you know the other* thing =)! And did you notice the abrupt change in the background music as it went to that dramatic feeling piano, the one that always plays during moments of drama/crisis in this show. Gotta feel so much for Animal Shinji’s girlfriend and yet she’s not said a word. My heart sinks each and every time you see Ryoko~chan turn back to look @ Sena just before she gets into that taxi cab with Animal Shinji….or it could just be Shinji but he is animal~istic HOT in the BEST of ways!!!!!!!!!!

hahaha…I wouldn’t know how to react about Animal Shinji, but I’ll let you enjoy his looks as much as I enjoy Momo-chan’s awesome model body in those tight outfits she has been wearing so far. Yummmmmmy!
So in March when I was in Japan, I stayed in Ueno, right off the Yamanote Line. I loved the game they played because it instantly made me remember how much fun I had this last time I was in Japan, and I spent a TON of time riding on the Yamanote Line, since it’s one big circle that goes all around Tokyo. Kind of reminds me of the Loop in Chicago when I lived there. Very cool game!

Really check out Sena’s apartment each time you see it, no table no problem as a couple of empty wine boxes from Minami’s non marriage-marriage gifts do come in handy. Minami eating in front of Takako~chan (aka: piano-brat who’s shedding her bratty ways slowly but surely thanks to Sena =)) is so Minami LOL…and there are cookies =). The fact that she’s here to see Sena says a lot and yet you really aren’t sure just yet why.

Like I mentioned earlier, I felt this was too fast in the show to happen in such an early episode, but maybe this is going someplace else and I’m not seeing the bigger picture yet? I did like the scene though…very heartwarming, and sad, but a good kind of sad. I kept thinking though…is Sena gonna walk her home this time lol?

I guess this mini story line was intended to flush out Sena’s character more than anything else, although Takako’s character surely makes the lasting impression till now. But so much bigger things are coming and I think they needed to keep things a bit simpler although simple isn’t what’s heading this way =P.

You can sense there’s more to be said between teacher and student and thank goodness that first Minami goes after her and then of course Sena! The memorable exchange of music here is so amazing. And again so COOL that they chose SharanQ for this mini story line and yet it’s not that much a tiny story line albeit it’s closing here as you really learn so much about Sena’s character through his turbulent to redeeming relationship with Takako (aka Sena’s student =D) and in many ways it’s like a nurturing for both of their hearts and souls. ^^

I didn’t read much into that. More like I felt Sena just kind of gave up trying to tell Minami what to do because he just got done having an emotional goodbye and probably didn’t want to ruin that moment by getting into an argument with Minami. Or maybe it’s what you said?

I’ve always liked to think it was an endearing little tidbit between them and particularly because of how Sena’s reacted to Minami in the past =). You wouldn’t want a stranger touching it, and yet it’s now okay because of their relationship dynamics changing ^^.

Sorry been working on two projects at once xD, actually the alteration of appearance here, it was 100% accidental as I was looking at a new WordPress theme as they from time to time e-mail them as featured WP posts and I for once thought why not for once try something new? You see I’ve had the very same theme here since arriving, the 2010 one being the same here for ages or at least as long as I’ve been here and so I tried a change. At first it was incredible…..large eye engaging header and dynamically larger images elsewhere. ONLY problem I realized later….was that the size and alignment of my post images became totally out of whack xD with the new theme and they all looked a mess with them being now all jumbled about with not formality as they once had. So, I then asked to get my old theme back and unfortunately along the way I lost all of my sidebar widgets, original header and backgound =(. And so after a lot of regret and heartache I added back a bit of my sidebar images and revamped my background into (Sakuratan inspired) and had my header become a random one which alternates with visits…but also altered the order of some sidebar widgets placing the essentials atop for once. It’s still very much a work in progress as I think I’ll be adding again “Featured” posts after awhile, but really in hindsight after initially being devastated, maybe it’s good to have a change for once here? =)
Well so the aforementioned dual projects are in swing with one being ready to go!…..the other which I mentioned in a reply to you in comments from the previous “Long Vacation” episode is just about to wrap up and so…busy busy but I’m trying my best to things lively hear albeit my limited time here….hm someone’s no longer single! ^^*.

Another quality episode, with some especially good scenes with Takako. Without giving anything away, does she eventually return? I hope so, as her character Is so interesting, and she’s played perfectly. Do you know Glen Gould’s recordings? He was quite an eccentric, who divided the experts with his occasionally anarchic intepretations of Bach, played either super-fast or super-slow. A good choice for a favourite pianist. As for Sharan Q, all those recordings have a poignancy now, don’t they, following Tsunku’s recent trauma. Do you know if he is okay? We’ve said about this before, but aren’t all the recent songs credited to the organisation rather than Tsunku? The great thing about dorama is that it can take its time to let things unfold. Imagine this story shoehorned into a movie. You’d never get to know the characters as you can here. Thank you for posting. Hope your wather is kind. It has been hot, very hot, and also humid here, day and night.

Ohhhh we shouldn’t cheat right =P!…..Mmm…you probably already have an idea though I imagine =). I’ve heard of him but not his music, just from the record store his name was mentioned in our classical room but I know nothing more sadly. That sounds fascinating and a bit strange but in a good way strange! I’ve seen Tsunku credited further but not as of late, I think he’s doing okay but no real news has been spoken. Un SharanQ is definitely in the iconic tier now, I mean they were always this larger than life awesome but it’s so true what you’ve said here as it really does place them even higher up and especially when you consider the amazing genius road Tsunku has taken his musical talents to, after SharanQ. Different producers all around I’ve seen however I’ve not been following most of the H!P groups outside of C-ute so I’m not quite sure when it comes to their production team or person. Ohhh it’s been humid here sooo humid and now there’s a large disturbance/ hurricane heading here! =(
