Yakushimaru Hiroko 35th Anniversary Concert Toki no Tobira (1)

At each year’s end the Kouhaku (Red & White Songfest) provides not only a full evenings plate of music with a chance to see whom received the honors to perform along with waiting for your favorites♥ to appear as it also lends a chance to discover “new” artists to fill your personal musical library collection as even long statured groups/artists/musicians upon your very first time seeing/hearing them can truly tug @ your music~loving soul with even just a single performance ^^.

Rewind to this past December Eve’s Kouhaku and there were more than a few artists that tugged @ me and so tonight I thought that I’d share one such artist whom totally mesmerized me on that evening with her song  ♪~♪ WOMAN “W no higeki yori” ♪~♪.  That artist was Yakushimaru Hiroko and upon a tiny bit of further digging I realized that her career was originally launched as an actress in 1978 with her musical debut coming in the early 80’s and that both are very established careers as her filmography/television and musical catalogs are impressive with the former being her career mainstay.

And while the majority of Yakushimaru Hiroko’s singles and albums are long out of print above is just a sampling of what’s still available from her musical catalog.

~Yakushimaru Hiroko 「WOMAN “W no higeki yori”」~

However upon witnessing such a stunning performance on the Kouhaku what I readily yearned for was a live concert before delving any further into her studio catalog and I found the absolutely perfect concert Blu-ray (also available on DVD) which was released in January of last year …..and the reasoning for its perfection ~*? Well it’s a 35th anniversary concert which means lots of singles/hits coverage!! In all Yakushimaru Hiroko released 21 singles and so tonight I’ve chosen three of those lead tracks and one additional beloved song for you to also fall in love~♥ with =). Now keep in mind that these songs were originally released during the early 80’s into the early 90’s so with these 35th anniversary performances you’ll be hearing reinterpreted versions of these songs while still keeping their original catchiness in tune and yet with these jazzy~concert hall styled performances these songs transcend time in a most glorious fashion. Tonight’s setting is intimate. The band accomplished and amazing. And so be prepared to be treated to a musical experience most special, oh! and I’m beginning with WOMAN “W no higeki yori” albeit it’s actually the encore finale, because it’s the very song Yakushimaru Hiroko performed on the Kouhaku on that New Year’s Eve ^^.

WOMAN “W no higeki yori” was originally released in 1984 as a single’s title track.

This is truly one of those melodies which can upon its very first listen capture you so much with both verses and its melodically uplifting chorus being equally memorable in the fullest sense ^^.

~Yakushimaru Hiroko “Anata wo motto shiritakute”

This single title track was also released in 1984 and I chose it particularly for its light hearted playfulness in both melody and lyrics and they even kept the oh~so~cute 80’s telephone ring complete with her dialogue here =)! This track simply dances upon clouds with the sweetest of piano melodies driving its rhythm, another can’t miss song I think ^^!

~Yakushimaru Hiroko “Kaze ni notte”~

“Kaze ni notte” was released as a single title track in 1991 and is one of her absolute sweetest of ballads!! Yakushimaru Hiroko’s vocals have an incredible depth to them and her powerful range can soar on any given note, and really here no finer song to exemplify just that ….. it’s pure elegance~♥ ^^.

~Yakushimaru Hiroko “Yume de aetara”~

And lastly one of my most favorite standards if you will from J-Pop’s golden age and I’m sure you’ve heard this one before right?, ….it’s “Yume de aetara” which has been recorded and performed by countless artists over the years as it’s one of the most catchy and memorable songs ever written I think and with this unique a bit slowed down jazzy arrangement it’s like never heard before and especially with the re~imagined ending which climaxes the song perfectly!  …enjoy ^^~♥!

    • Throughout the years watching the Kouhaku has really inspired new artists/groups into my life and Yakushimaru Hiroko’s performance that night was enough to get me searching CdJapan for a concert release by her =).

This concert is just amazing with a most elegant aura about it throughout, and of course Hiroko’s vocals are exquisite to put it lightly! Great song writing and musicianship at its best …I’m so happy you enjoyed her performances here ^^.

This looks like a fantastic concert. Interestingly, I’ve had some of her vinyl singles on Otokichi bookmarked for a while, as this is an era I greatly love (I’ve just completed my Kikuchi Momoko vinyl singles collection, for example), so your post has encouraged me to ‘add to cart’ very soon!

    Love this:

    • Ahhhhh that’s so cool you’ve already fallen for her music and voice of course right! =)

What did you think of her song WOMAN “W no higeki yori?” It’s literally the one that got me interested on that evening of this past Kouhaku! First time hearing that melody and just how she performed as her voice is just so beautiful and elegant and yet powerful all the same. It’s such a memorable melody~♥ and did you readily recognize the last clip here? “Yume de aetara” is I guess you’d say a Japanese standard of a song as it’s been recorded and performed countless numbers of times by so many different artists. Matsu Takako also does a wonderful performance of this song and hers is a bit more peppy as the original stands, you can find it here in this post and I’d highly recommend getting her concert featured in this post too for all of its jazzy~J-Pop~goodness but first I may have to get you to fall in love with Matsu Takako first right? Okay here’s for starters as there’s lots more =):

      https://morningberryz48.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/matsu-takako-concert-tour-2010-time-for-music/

It’s wonderful to hear reinterpretations of her early singles from the 80’s~90’s genre and this band on stage with her is top notch incredible!! And as I know how much you love jazz I just know that this concert is a can’t miss for you! Love all of her hairstyles she went through throughout the years as you peruse her catalog of singles! Like she really changed her looks time and time again didn’t she! A~h Nakamori Akina …Un! there’s definitely a resemblance going on there and she too has been such a solid artist throughout the years as she has so much catalog established. Hiroko’s so darling in the clip you linked above, and nothing’s as great as the music programs of that era! I’m just so in love with her voice, so strong with a very unique tone and character all her own.

ps. I’ve edited your links above by adding a space above and below them as it sometimes allows video clips to embed directly into comments here if written that way depending on the streaming source ^^.

Hope you can get her vinyl singles soon! And also a concert …..ahhh I’d recommend this one here as it’d provide a perfect evening of beautiful music which has a very high replay value I must mention too =)!

Thank you for listening to my latest musical effort! The titles sometimes come half way through but mostly afterwards. This used to be a problem when I was writing my woodwind pieces for a publisher, as I could never decide upon titles. A few times the finished piece was sitting there for days while I searched high and low for something suitable. Here’s one with a punning title: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0570167027?keywords=philip%20hansell&qid=1437752693&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 It’s a ‘solo’ that’s ‘so low’ (because it’s a very deep instrument). I had the title of this one before I started the piece.
As for AKB48’s ‘Halloween Night’: I can’t wait! It’s such catchy song, isn’t it.

        Liked by 1 person

        • A wonderful use of punny~isms =) …with “solo”, I guess you could develop a feeling about a melody over time and have a title then spring to mind that way and it may even be much more perhaps natural that way although sometimes you may have a very specific idea in mind before composing so then the title is readily set from the onset of your composition. Your Philip Hansell caught me a bit off guard ….artists can have many stage names though I know, funny how it’s telling me it can’t be sent to the U.S. xD.

Un looking forward to their new single’s arrival too and it’s very rare that I’d hear a bit before the single arrives =), Hmmm we’d have to wait much longer but I wonder if they should have scheduled its release nearer to Halloween? Like with HYDE’s Halloween Junky Orchestra he released those right near to the night of spooky festivities! =)

Ah, you have reinstated the ‘like’ button! Yes, I looked on U.S. Amazon and saw my pieces weren’t there, although I know they can be bought in the States because a few years back there were many sales at a woodwind convention. When the woman who originally published them (she taught music at a university) retired, she sold her entire catalogue to a Scottish publisher who now does the selling, although they’re not adding to this particular range. As for the name, it is confusing, but I decided to use my middle name (Leslie) as a surname for various projects, such as the books, just in case they really bombed!
It is strange that Halloween Night is so early in the calendar. I’ve not found the complete lyrics yet to see if the Halloween theme continues into the main body of the song. I did find one pre-review, but had to use Google Translate to read it. Sasshi became ‘Sassy’, which is pretty appropriate, I thought! Do you know if there’ll be a new Halloween Junky Orchestra release this year, or perhaps a re-release ?

            • I just put it back on sort of on a whim, I really prefer conversation instead of a like click ~* so we’ll see how long it lasts this time, really the reason I removed it the first time =).

Ah! I get it, funny I never even thought it’d be your middle name that I’ve known all this time ^^. AKB’s YouTube channel just published a short version of the pv a short while ago and I think it’s going to have a lot of fashion statements in there to put it lightly!! I’m just wondering if there’s going to be a ‘slutty nurse’ somewhere in there?? Kidding!! LOL!~! I mean I can’t tell you how many times it’s been suggested that I go as a ‘slutty nurse’ on Halloween which makes me wonder if guys secretly get injured in order to go to the hospital in hopes of getting turned on (。ーωー。)笑!My answer: I’ll just go as a slut that a way I can wear whatever I want =)! OMG that is so wacky …’sassy’ who knew xD! I’ve yet to hear anything being done by HYDE this year for Halloween and actually last years came as a complete surprise with the all new animated mv versions which were great!! He was just in the UK I think this past weekend for a Japan Night Festival there?….I think it just occurred but he performed as the duo Vamps whom are very awesome!!!! They’re a rock duo and HYDE really can do pretty much anything in my book and he’s awesome for doing so!!!~! There was also a sanshin master, J-pop and folk performers too at this year’s festival as I believe it’s an annual event there ^^.

I’ve just spotted that event. He was under the guise of VAMPS. http://hyperjapan.co.uk/latest-news/vamps-and-more-j-rock-bands-in-japan-night-at-hyper-japan/ There’s a Christmas market towards the end of the year which might be fun to go to. London’s only about 80 miles away, but I rarely go. Hawaiian (and US) Halloween looks such fun, from what I’ve seen. I think I’ve said before, it’s only become a big thing here since the early 80s. I think E.T. really started things off. Before that, back in Days of Yore, it was just another night, although I think people who fancied themselves as witches/warlocks etc probably assembled in secret and performed ceremonies. I expect they still do.

                Liked by 1 person

                • Un VAMPS is his current rock duo which is active, myself …I’m always hoping for that once more L’arc~en~ciel reunion =). 80 miles isn’t too far away I suppose, of course though nothing on this island can really be considered to be too far away which is my life’s perspective of distance =P although our horrific traffic can make even the nearest destinations seem sooooooooo far away xD. Halloween really has become such a festive event for adults too and not just for the kids and candies and treats anymore! Ah! E.T. I love that movie!!!! I actually have this sort of large E.T. plushy and if you search this site a bit you’ll find him even wearing some Hello! Project T-shirts from awhile back ^^.

Any luck in ordering any of Yakushimaru Hiroko’s singles? She has some compilations too which makes it easier to collect her singles although I know that the allure of 45’s is a great thing and most collectible! I wish it were possible for other 80’s artists to have their hits re-imagined into modern pop or jazz even, Sakai Noriko’s early singles for instance would me most welcome of a catalog for this very thought! What’s great is that Tanimura Yumi’s performances have reached into recent times so we don’t need to just imagine a lot of her early songs being performed live in new lights and arrangements =). Moritaka Chisato’s very early catalog at times can sound dated so it’s wonderful that she’s been doing this ongoing series with CD/DVD releases as she re-imagines her songs throughout the years both in sound and in visuals ….I’ve been collecting them all and will post them in the future here ^^.

I’m planning to add a few Yakushimaru singles to my next order (I’m addicted to Otokichi and put in a modest order almost every week!). I try to buy items that are alike in shape so that less complicated packaging is required. (I’ve noticed that for some CDs Masa replaces older, heavier jewel cases with modern, lighter ones, which helps with postage.) 45s usually come in an adjustable cardboard box. If you’re buying 8cm CD singles as well, two of those are the same size as one 45rpm and will fit in the box too.
                    As for Tanimura Yumi: http://www.110107.com/mob/pageShw.php?site=OTONANO&ima=0621&cd=yumi_tanimura_gp
This presumably updates Two Hearts, which is now out of print. $140-ish, though, so quite an investment, compared to Two Hearts, which was around $30.

                    • A~hhh you’ve quickly become his #1 customer =)! No doubt he’s the very best source for all of your difficult to find musical needs!! It’d be fun one day to be able to have a beer with him or for me rather wine as he often meets up with his customers from over the years and it always looks like such a fun social time! I imagine you’d have loads to speak about with music and cultures and I’m sure he’d love to have you there plus there’s the added gigantic bonus of being able to firsthand peruse his shop of wonders ^^. That’s so wonderful of him to knowingly package them that way too.

Gosh that is so pricey and really you’d be going for the mvs mostly I believe? Perhaps Otokichi can search for “Two Hearts” instead? Interestingly that release was released twice over the years and in its original version it came in a CD sized jewel case and was pretty high priced!!!!….and then the larger DVD sized case version was ironically much more fan friendly priced. I remember I had hesitated to purchase the original release when I first saw it on the shelf and when I went back it was already gone =O!!….and so I ended up with the less expensive DVD case sized version, funny how that worked out. A mv collection as significant as hers should never have gone out of print imo….!

I’ve yet to watch all of ‘Sailor Suit and Machine Gun’, having only seen excerpts. It’s sometimes alluded to in AKB videos. Really looking forward to getting the singles. I must add Two Hearts to my Wants List. The laser disc is in stock, but I’ve not been able to find a cheap enough player yet. As soon as I do, I’m intending to get my hands on some of those wonderful 1980s and 90s music releases that Masa has. I’d love to meet him one day and yes, visit the shops! I’d have to acquire lots of spare money before then, though! I was annoyed when I order the DVD of Two Hearts from Yes Asia only to find it was actually out of print. Yahoo Auctions would be a great place for such goodies, but the postage is ridiculous. Clearly the best thing to do would be to move to Japan…

                    • I imagine there must be quite a few releases on laserdisc which never made it to a latter format, I know there’s at least a few Ribbon laserdiscs which were never re-released including concerts and variety material…. a friend put them onto VHS for me awhile back but it’d be nice if they were re-released into the modern digital age. It’s amazing you can still find laserdisc players and I’m guessing it’s their rarity which is driving up their cost =/. Un that is odd that they’d list an item they cannot even acquire and the proxy cost of going through the auctions is definitely a pricey idea as most of those sellers won’t ship outside of Japan unlike most overseas eBay sellers.

I’m a really new fan as mentioned in this post here and if it were not for last year’s Kouhaku I’d be totally missing out on her gorgeous voice and wonderfully written songs, thankfully that’s not the case and thank you Kouhaku for always turning me onto new music and artists! This concert is amazing from beginning to end and is definitely a must have!! Both live band and concert ambiance are great too and there’s just so much fun energy here to go along with the assortment of catchy tunes =).
