Ayaya♡, still simply the best.

Matsuura Aya in Luxury Christmas Night 2013 at COTTON CLUB

The first dilemma of a solo artist when in concert stems from their ability to create an aura of stage presence…a dynamic that isn’t as demanding upon group ensembles and units as their performances aren’t dependent on a single performer alone. And anyone who’s watched any Ayaya concert will probably agree that she entails all the qualities needed to “own” the stage and connect with the audience whether the venue be large or intimate, something that she’s displayed time and time again over the years.

Even going back during her Hello!Project days, Ayaya was unique in H!P in that her shows always featured a live band and have been that way for quite some time now. The extra dimension that a live band brings to the atmosphere of a concert versus recorded backing music simply cannot be overstated! Interestingly there was a time when idol groups regularly employed live bands…many of them being a set cast of musicians who toured with the groups on a regular basis. Some even featured band names back then as they were really an extension of those idol groups in the largest sense. The extra energy created on stage with the presence of a live band is undeniable and with that also comes the possibility of improvisation…the true inner beauty of live band performances. The possibilities are endless as the art of improvisation can take songs out of their skins and breath a whole new life into them. Of course add to all of that, Ayaya’s undeniable vocal stature even going back to her idol~ly days as hers was always upon the upper echelon of artists born from H!P and beyond even…the short list of the former being the likes of Mikitty, Gomaki and Nacchi in her latter releases.

EPBE-5197

Now for tonight’s performances, think back to those days of loving Ayaya’s DVD release ↑↑↑ “Suna wo Kamuyoni. . . NAMIDA – STUDIO LIVE” with the only complaint being just how short it runs as it includes just three choice performances. Still this mini stage live with a complete accompaniment of an amazing seven piece live band resonated with a collective fans’ wishes~* of it continuing on and on or perhaps an entirely new concert with likewise ambiance~.

Matsuura Aya Luxury Christmas Night 2013 at COTTON CLUB Blu-ray

Well that wish~* does indeed come to fruition here as Ayaya’s Blu-ray release ↑↑↑ of her exquisite performance at the COTTON CLUB titled “Luxury Christmas Night 2013” features an amazing live band, the intimacy of a smaller venue as well as a dream~* worthy set-list taken from two consecutive performances. And while this heightened class of performance occurring in such a warm venue can’t be overstated as it creates such a unique atmosphere for audience and artists alike, it’s clearly Ayaya’s vocals taken to jazz not lightly here as she puts on display a culmination of just how much she’s grown into a seasoned professional all so evident in her vocal nuance/control as well as her audience engaging MCs throughout these musical gems….how she interacts, the seemingly effortless candidness as Ayaya surely can work a room!

Interestingly this Blu-ray was just released mid February of this year although the performances covered date all the way back to the winter of 2013….why the long wait I’ve no idea but I do know that it was way WAY worth that wait =).

So for tonight’s enticing I’ve chosen 5 favorite performances, songs I’m sure you’ve got on your beloved~Ayaya♥ tracks list and while with the sheer massive size of Blu-ray files I’d needed to dumb them down a bit so to speak resolution wise, I’m pretty sure they’ll still appear pretty clear here albeit there’s simply nothing like true HD loveliness to engage your eyes, heart and mind…..and with that in mind do purchase this one as I guarantee you’ll be in for a live concert treat like no other! ^^

Remind me again, how did Ayaya end up in H!P? It’s so weird, and yet so the kind of thing H!P used to do right. They let her be a solo idol throughout, in a time where soloists basically don’t exist, but H!P rolled with it anyway. H!P still had Nacchi and Gocchis n with good solo careers, but they were still coming from group work. And AKB can’t do them at all. The solo careers of AKB girls always felt closer to the H!P shuffle groups than actual careers, with how little any of them did. It’s funny, the one member who got the most solo concerts is Yukirin, even though she only had 2 singles; and two of the concerts were before the singles. She managed to put on a concert just with solo versions of 48 songs and H!P covers =D

You just know, if an Ayaya showed up on a 48 audition asking for a solo career, she’d either change her mind or be shown the door.

They do have Sasshi though. She’s pretty much the Ayaya of variety.

Great choice of songs 😀 I just saw the video for Suna, because it’s my favorite, but I’ve had it and all the others playing in the back for a while now as I was setting up a month’s worth of TV show downloads. I still prefer H!P’s music / concerts overall, and Ayaya was the best performer in there.

I love how the description of the comments section here asks us all to “Say something nice”. I do my best 🙂

    • LOL I did that for the trolls….so the comment section is not troll-friendly =).

In all hindsight it’s a wonderful thing that Tsunku didn’t absorb Ayaya into a group back then….think of how Mikitty’s career had just begun to get some legs under it and then wham she was in Momusu….though it must be said of how much fun she single handedly crafted while in the group with all of those game performances and just the variety stuff with her awesome demeanor sort of like how Yuko was with the ‘kids’ way back when. Someone would begin acting a bit too silly and then there was Mikitty to take care of it….she had the greatest stare next to Yuko!

It’s an oddity how AKSoloist don’t soar much more some perhaps should have….I always wondered what a Oshima Yuko solo single would have been like….mostly for selfish reasons though =P! Acchan’s singles have all been most excellent though…but now she appears to be in acting mode much more than anything else and she’s good. Ah H!P covers always a good thing for any idol!! The older catalog is forever iconic now and I love whenever I hear any AKGirl speaking of her fandom with H!P and how they influenced them so much. Oh it escapes my mind now…but there was an artist awhile back whom actually released a “BEST OF” album after releasing just one album and some singles….it was sort of bizarre and yet a money maker still =P. I wonder if talent agencies in the idol world do the…”you’re over qualified” thing xD.

“Suna wo kamuyou ni…NAMIDA” is such a favorite♥ of mine’s too!! One of the sweetest melodies ever written and Ayaya the perfect one to perform it! Her Double Rainbow concert opens with my other beloved Ayaya ballad of all time which is Tanimura Yumi’s composition of “Egao”….the sheer range and strength needed for this song is mesmerizing!!!! I have it posted here, it’s Ayaya at her very best!:

Thank you for this very nice article.
It’s good to know that Aya’s artistic flame especially as a live entertainer is still kept burning.
Despite the fact that our lady has been doing little in the few years to help her fans in that course,

It was indeed very evident from the first moments on that she was made for the stage. She took command. And she loved it 🙂
And that was a big part of her success. The pure joy of performing that was evident for everyone and that sent a spark to the audience. She admittedly loved herself back then and loved seeing herself on TV or stage.
And while she lost that innocence over the years to come realizing that a lot of people depended on her she always kept that aura that you just can’t learn.

Unfortunately her early years as the super-idol soloist took their toll later on.
She is now one of the most publicity-shy personalities in showbusiness.and I somewhat doubt that she will return in the next decade at least. Hard to believe that (except for one paparazzi show at the airport on their way to the Hawaii wedding) there is NO picture of her and Keita together. Not one. Lol
While I respect her decision I just wish she would have communicated it with her fans and said goodbye (the way Momoe Yamaguchi or Maki Goto did).

But we will “always have Paris” 🙂
And as long as I live there will be the Matsuurian for people to find out what a talent she is

    • Hi Matt,
So so exciting to hear from such an impassioned Ayaya fan!! She really does keep from the public eye so much and in a lot of ways I can understand her reasons to want to for the most part. Un I totally agree!….after her initial idol image was produced in H!P, Tsunku really created a much different auru too about her musically….I can remember being so mesmerized the very first time I watch her pv DVD single for “The Last Night” and even before that with “Sougen no hito”….it was such a different approach and kind of like an out of body experience for the rest of H!P back then. Her abilities vocally were so heightened above everyone and Tsunku knew just how to tap in that save for her appearances in H!P units where she seemed sort of out of place at times.

The end with H!P was a shame as with Gomaki albeit for different circumstances and to not have a formal good-bye to fans remains a void unfilled. Her concerts are a pure joy to watch…all of them with this latest performance on beautiful Blu-ray being simply exquisite in every way!! =)

thank you for the article.I haven’t heard what’s Matsuura-san doing after the H!P catastrophe years ago(i was youngster, fresh from enjoying JPop for few months then this happened).I still have the Time’s magazine article how they criticised her compared to other talented JPop artists like Hikki.Life is so unfair.

    • What an unfortunate article for Time to cover…..I remember a few years ago there was a post which published an article about AKB48 and how it in their words was ‘exploiting young girls’…..how misinformed and just the lack of facts and real knowledge it took to write such a thing I thought back then =/. Likewise with Ayaya, she’s not being covered fairly really….just so overjoyed!!! that at the very least she’s still holding these much more intimate musical events so that her true fans can still enjoy and love her incredible voice, not to mention what a pro she’s grown into as an overall performer..I mean she was always great in concert during her H!P days but she’s grown even further in a very social sense as seen in this concert on full display =).

Hi! I’ve finally got round to reading your excellent post. This looks amazing, and is reason enough to upgrade the DVD player to Blu-Ray. Ayaya remains my favourite H!P vocalist, and her songs some of Tsunku’s finest work. Yes, a shame that the Namida DVD is so short as it’s quite different from a regular concert. It feels a lot more intimate, as if she’s actually singing especially for you, if that makes sense. I was also pleased to see Mattthecat’s link to the Matsuurian, a fantastic resource which I have now bookmarked.

    • Oh YES the resolution is gorgeous!! Odd though that it’s not even listed on DVD as you’d imagine there’d be one also. “Sougen no hito”, “YOUR SONG~Seishun Sensei~”, THE LAST NIGHT”, “Egao”, “dearest.”, “Hitori”…..and so many others but I thought those were amongst her very best written and so so suited to her voice. I call those songs beautiful pop! Of course I do love her early catalog very much too as after all it was her single and video (the video was very important!!! as after a friend sent it to me I ended up watching it on a loop numerous time during that evening and couldn’t get over just how cute and catchy it was!!…and then as they say the rest is history as I then proceeded on that very same evening to order her entire catalog up to that point which luckily was still a bit early….) …that song was “Momoiro kataomoi.” I so agree it was some of Tsunku’s finest work and he really could only write the latter ones for her I always thought you know with her range and vocal nuances considered. This is much to rare a release no doubt, just overjoyed it’s been finally offered to her fans!~! Un! Mattthecat’s the real deal fan of Ayaya for sure =)! Plus I know how much you love jazz so this concert is going to move you so much.
