Miyamoto Musashi

Miyamoto Musashi drama DVD release

Originally having read Yoshikawa Eiji’s novel “MUSASHI”, it was a dream~* come true when NHK announced their 42nd Taiga Drama “Musashi” back in 2003 and with Hawaii long being blessed with the presentation of these incredible year-long drama series it was a truly spectacular and memorable series and has since remained as my favorite Taiga Drama of all-time period and I do have the entire drama taped onto VHS as I would watch religiously each and every week in earnest anticipation for each next episode. You see the Taiga Drama itself was directly based on YoshikawaMiyamoto Musashi (31) Eiji’s writing which chronicles Miyamoto Musashi’s life from his early youth as an orphan whose persona developed into a that of a coarse young man whose early calling was that of a skilled martial artist of a likewise nature, then showing his life from the country changing battle of Sekigahara as a defeated swordsman onto his lifetime meetings with Otsu, his childhood friend Matahachi and his ultimately life-changing encounter with the Buddhist priest Takuan as Musashi sets his direction upon the ways of the sword and mind in an endless pursuit of perfection and understanding as he constantly sets to better himself as a person. Set in a deeply feudal time, his travels and immense skill with a sword garner Miyamoto Musashi (48)attention and challenges from numerous highly skilled opponents/masters and obstacles alike with those whom seek to defeat him and likewise many from his conquered past whom seek revenge, Musashi’s path as a ronin ultimately finds him in the climatic battle with his greatest opponent Sasaki Kojiro on the island of Ganryujima. And yes I did mention that the Taiga Drama version aired for an entire calendar year with an episode aired a week totaling in all 49 episodes at its epic conclusion!! And while such an immense number of episodes truly did do Yoshikawa Eiji’s writings complete and detailed justice as words from his novel literally came to life upon the screen, the mini drama set here acts as a wonderfully produced and acted depiction of Musashi all the while it can be consumed in a single sitting of just four hours. And like the stellar cast of the Taiga Drama, this mini-epicMiyamoto Musashi (83) series also boasts a notable cast as well with SMAP’s Kimutaku (Kimura Takuya) taking on the lead role of the swordsman and philosopher himself! And while there’s simply no way to compete with the epic-ness and all out inclusiveness of the year long drama, “Miyamoto Musashi” the mini-series is no slouch as it features inspired sets and wardrobes as well as top notch acting and direction with of course a satisfying abundance of dazzling fight choreography throughout. So in just four hours…not bad for taking in an engrossing account of the life and times of one of Japan’s most iconic figures in history~. And if this mini-series whets your appetite for more, then there’s always the 49 episode Taiga Drama to lose yourself in…also highly recommended viewing ^^!

    • NHK Taiga Dramas are incredible productions and as I mentioned above they last an entire year in their broadcast, always stellar casts with special appearances along the way and the writing and sets and costumes are just awesome. Oh yes the Miyamoto Musashi mini-drama DVD set I did purchase as it was used to create this post and it’s photographed atop this post on the left =).

It’s such a compelling read!!! LOl ehhh? you read just the ‘first’ chapter? =O

Un I too think it’s the best samurai genre novel!!! I believe it’s a mixture of his real life as well as some layers added in for the storytelling throughout but it’s definitely based upon his actual life and travels.

“Rurouni Kenshin”‘s been getting such a buzz and they’re releasing all three parts in a Bluray box set too! I haven’t seen any of them but I’m thinking it’s going on the must see list ^^.

    • After watching through the Taiga drama for an entire year i was just a tad bit hesitant (don’t know why as it’s Kimutaku♥ agreed!!!) as to how they’d manage a condensed presentation depicting this incredible novel…but I must say it’s absolutely perfect~*! Choreography, costumes, dialogue, acting all just perfect~*.
