Ogura Yuko (43)

For years Yuko-rin’s iconic gravure stature has been pretty much all I knew of her career for the most part as she’s amassed a most impressive collection of both shashinshuu and DVD releases and it wasn’t until a little over three years ago that I became aware that this most adorable idol also dove into the world of J-pop as she’s released singles, albums and visual collections along the way =). Why three years ago you may ask, well a long standing tradition of idols and idol groups alike has been a post career release of a single definitive collection which traditionally goes under the title of “Perfect Best” and and you’ll see these CD releases, sometimes remastered too!….across many of the major record labels. So a little over three years ago in the summer of 2011 I came across a then upcoming release titled “Perfect Best” by Ogura Yuko and I had a OMG really she sings too?? moment to myself after which I quickly pre-ordered it =P!!

Ogura Yuko music releases...

Needless to say with my suddenly peaked interest I opted to grab a few more of her music releases which I could find still in print which included a single, a rather beautifully packaged album and a video collection of hers ^^.

Now you’re probably wondering why the Beatles and bear reference in the title here or more likely you’re probably just thinking about how weird I am but in any case upon you watching her music videos here, one in particular will ‘answer all’ questions =D. But first let’s take a moment to ponder and then ponder some more about the rather interesting title to her DVD title I’ve got here (pictured above, left). Yup it’s not your imagination as it does indeed read “POPO-PORN” =o!!! PORN? huh really? Now before you freak! there isn’t anything porn-like about this DVD whew!!!! And when you see the katakana just below it appears that the whole “POPPOPO-N” received an ‘extra’ R in it giving the eye glance customer the instant notion that Yuko-rin had somehow turned naughty lol =O. And while Yuko-rin’s gravure visuals have been no doubt very sexy over the years she’s always remained this cute and cuddly and just really sweet idol~♥ =).

Okay now that we’ve gotten all of that bear and porn stuff out of the way….now there’s a sentence I didn’t think I’d be typing today when I awoke =P, let’s enjoy some of her music!

Now don’t mind the randomly inserted gravure shots of Yuko-rin as I just thought why not sprinkle a bit of her iconic-idol side here to go along with her music =) however do note that Yuko-rin went all out idol~ing with her brand of J-pop and never once crossed over her gravure side into the picture so really her releases are truly 100% pure idol in nature ^^.

“Yume ga kanau youni ~ miirapoumakikireeche ~”

(Live from YUKO RING 2005)

As you’d imagine Yuko-rin’s vocals are very anime-character like~♥ and there’s a sweetly childlike aspect to the way she naturally sings and in coupling those together it’s just really so adorable and while her vocals may not be remarkable, hers captures the essence of an idol wholeheartedly and really for the pure idol fan isn’t that something remarkable in itself, to adore and love ^^.

I’m actually opening with Yuko-rin’s encore song from her secret live YUKO RING 2005 event and it’s just this song makes for the perfectly joyous tune to begin with and idols also tend to go more naturally with their wardrobe for their encores as they leave behind their much more costume like outfits which always has this much warmer feeling about it, not that there’s anything wrong with that as I so love fun wardrobes too ^^.

“Lovin’ You” (pv)

“Lovin’ You” has this really whimsical warmth about it and it actually took me a couple of listens to GET IT and the real hook lies in its chorus, oh yeah and then there’s the bear, huh talkin’ bear, ‘mysterious’ twist at the ending and there’s something really wonderful about the simplicity of the pv itself and the style in which it was filmed to appear as nostalgic itself ^^.

“Vitamin LOVE” (pv)

“Vitamin LOVE” has anime theme song written all over it and if by some chance it is an anime song I apologize for not knowing =P and well with the glittery gold background and Yuko-rin’s various colorful wardrobes including that red and white super hero looking one which indeed comes complete with a laser water gun blaster how could this not be an anime song =P!! Well “chances” =P are it’s not but still it gives you that same boost of pep and upbeat~ness which in some cases you can only get from a well done anime theme. Yuko-rin’s vocals are particularly in full child~like mode here….aww she sounds so cute ^^.

“Koi no jumon wa papapipupa”

(Live from YUKO RING 2005)

Right from the very first notes you’re sort of expecting to see Tom Jones come walking onto the stage right?! Ah wait you do know that song right……

Tom Jones

..in any case any song with the lyrics “pa pa pi pu pe pa pe po…” has me at “pa” =D but seriously the brass is awesome here and this song has the cutest of melodies and rhythms ^^.

“Eien Raburin (∂▽<)/ “

Traditional yukata meets space age yukata~♥ =)! Yuko-rin’s most visually dynamic pv is well coupled with an overall solid J-pop song with an air of the 90’s about it ^^.

“Daijoubu” (mv)

(Live from YUKO RING 2005)

And now we close this post with the opening song from Yuko-rin’s YUKO RING 2005 event because I’m slightly wacky that way =)….and while she may sound a bit nervous to begin, Yuko-rin’s confidence rises with the arrival of the very first chorus and as with all great songs the major hooks are always in the heart of the song and here with “Daijoubu” we’ve got more hooks than a tackle box ^^!

Enjoyable post as always. I rather enjoyed her singing, but then, I listen to a lot of seiyuu singers, who often share a similar voice. It’s more fragile than an experienced seiyuu, though, and is now and again in danger of being overwhelmed by the backing track, but always manages to stay on top! Lovely songs. Lovely photos too. And you’re right about Tom Jones coming to mind. He’s still going strong, of course, and has retained that amazing voice.

    • Her music career was a bit brief but she really made the most of it and I love how the song writers managed to write for her very idol~ly songs and most are instantly catchy too with some classic style hooks in them and at times I hear inspirations from other songs too….you know when you hear a chorus and it sort of reminds you of another great song you’ve heard before =). She also had some great wardrobes and styling to go with it all….happy you got to listen to these tracks and performances and for years I just knew her as a gravure model/ idol as she’s been modeling for ages it seems and somehow she never managed to age a bit it seemed too. Really you can imagine ““Koi no jumon wa papapipupa” being written after the song writer had been listening to some Tom Jones =D….that’s such an iconic song of his and to tell you the truth I’ve no idea of how I even know that song as neither my father or mother ever had any of his albums around to my knowledge =P. I’m thinking it must have been in a movie or something and yet I knew what he looked like too hmmm.

This is I think the only artist book which I’ve read cover to cover as i was just obsessed with The Beatles for this period of my life in my late teens….a co-worker had turned me onto them and it all began with me knowing of the soundtrack for “Give My Regards to Broadstreet” and how I wasn’t aware that Paul McCartney had been in this legendary group….he was so shocked that he immediately began suggesting which albums I should get first until I eventually owned their discography. The Beatles Anthology was awesome!!!..and it was like the entire world had been long anticipating anything new from them! Goes to show just how oddly my brain works as I see Yuko-rin revealed to be in the bear suit and I immediately connect it to the whole rumors of Paul being the Walrus in a symbolic sense =P.

Quite often Tsunku treats us to something that sounds familiar, like a bass line from Blondie, or a bar or so from a movie theme, but the he goes and does his own thing with it. He loves the Beatles too, doesn’t he. Their songs are quite amazing, although I don’t listen to them much. As for Sir Tom, he’s one of the judges on The Voice, which you must have a version of on US TV (Chinese version of The Voice is amazing, with some great singers). He’s sung with everyone from Janis Joplin to… well, everyone! He’s one of those people who have always been around, it seems.

        • Ahhh this is a great concert!!!…and the special pairings and groupings were always fun just to see what interesting combinations of members they would come up with. You’ve picked a perfect song which shows Tsunku’s love of The Beatles and the 60’s so much =)! And with Kamei♥ and Mittsii…Kamei of course being my idol obsession of those days! And what Tsunku did with the music for Tanpopo I think remains as some of his most profound tributes to The Beatles and fittingly they even released their photo book with the Sgt. Pepper’s themed all over it. He is the master of taking musical inspirations and making them all his own, you’re so right about that! That’s so cool!! I didn’t know that The Voice has versions of the show overseas all over and even in China that’s awesome!! And it probably didn’t even begin here I’m guessing, these talent shows often times change their hosts/judges and The Voice here has added the most awesome Gwen Stefani for this year’s lineup of judges!!!! No Doubt is awesome as is Gwen Stefani’s solo works and she’s made this year’s show so much better I think!..although past judges were all great too =).
