Yolk

Each year in the rural areas of Kagawa and Niigata Prefectures of Japan after the rice harvest are piles of straw. One day someone came up with the idea of using the same techniques traditionally used to build straw roofs, local artists instead build animals on wooden frames. The idea was picked up by the master and straw sculptures began to hold festivals, exhibitions of his creations. The most famous place in Kagawa Prefecture and Niigata.

These are all truly amazing works of art!!! I can’t imagine how much time and effort must’ve been invested into each of these awesome straw art creations! My favorites are the Easter Island looking head, the elephant, sumo wrestler…oh well I actually love them all =)!

straw art

Well they have created Sharknado already so why not a Strawshark horror film?=P

straw art2

Look how large these are! This gorilla is awesome!

straw art3

It’s like a shaggy elephant~♥…so cute!

straw art4

This turtle’s amazing too!

straw art5

Now I’m not exactly sure…but I think it’s a kangaroo?…must be I just realized the pouch ^^.

straw art6

Huh?….a house/shack monster?

straw art7

What’s also really cool about these art structures is that people can actually get onto them, really shows just how sturdy their frames are.

straw art8

Rhino? Or is some sort of dinosaur? =)

straw art9

Great looking plane!….and there must be a cockpit you can get into there.

straw art10

And there’s what I think is a tribute to those amazing head statues on Easter Island!

straw art11

Sumo anyone?…complete with a ring too ^^.

straw art12

Can’t enlarge the print here enough to be able to read the tinier text but I’m thinking this tank’s modeled after an actual wartime tank.

straw art13

And lastly it could either be the Sphinx? or a samurai in head gear? or just some dude wearing a hat or something =P.

These are incredible! I’ve not seen these before, so it’s very exciting to learn about them. Maybe we should try something similar in the UK. Traditionally, the corn was woven into corn dollies, which were kept safe throughout winter. http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/harvest/corndollies.html

    • Corn dollies are really beautiful….good luck ~* charms I’m reading there. The enormity of these is so impressive and the details too of course and I don’t think I’ll think of straw in the same way ever again now seeing their art potential…..who knew!

I think the elephant is the cutest thing here for some reason I’m not quite sure of… Well, it loses to the dog inside of the Sphynx, but that’s unfair.

Also, shark reminded me of this I read today:

I feel a bit sad for Batshark… But I guess Strawshark wouldn’t have this problem, since he’s already looking fine out of the water.

    • Batshark is awesome!!!!!! You made me just laugh the most I had all day…(^q^)! He even had the utility belt and mask so you know…no one recognizes him while he’s fighting baddies =D! Oh Batshark, if only you could’ve been there that day to help me find my top before that creepy but thinking he was saving me from distress guy showed up on the shoreline (。ーωー。)笑!It’s been a few years so I’m beginning to see the funny side of that embarrassingly awful day. Whomever did that comic is great!!!! It’s like that style of get to the point humor….do you know of Gary Larson’s humor? He’s my all time favorite and one year for Christmas I got his complete editions which I truly treasure and crack up over =). Well maybe Strawshark will help and corner that baddie when he gets off the pier =). The elephant is amazing!!!!…but so true that the little doggie gives the okay it’s a Sphinx quite the adorable advantage ^^.
