~ 「TGIF!」Idol♥’s unzipped on way back Fridays presents Encounters, Nagasaku Hiromi in Morocco (Volume 60)

Idols unzipped...

Happy aloha~♥ Friday! =)

As we all know, knowledge is power so for tonight’s Idols♥ Unzipped we’ll be going back quite a few years to revisit an old episode of the Japanese program “Encounters” which actually aired here in Hawaii on our very own Japanese television station KIKU waaaay back and actually I’m not even quite certain of the exact year in which this program was aired here but it did occur just post Ribbon (Nagasaku Hiromi’s J-pop trio group) so it’s most likely mid to latter 90’s as that would be my very best guess…anyway one night I had caught this program being broadcast and to my wonderful surprise the celebrity being featured as none other than the wonderful and most talented Nagasaku Hiromi who’s career has moved from idol, to artist to modeling and now to actress.

Nagasaku Hiromi visits Moracco in Encounters (2)

“Encounters” is a variety program which aims to explore and educate about the vast different cultures of the world as select Japanese celebrities go on unique visits to foreign countries in search of learning much more about their ways of life and natural habitats first hand. Tonight’s episode runs just under 47 minutes (as I managed to clumsily edit out the commercials back then =P) and is fully subtitled in English which makes it fully enjoyable even if you’re not familiar with either the Japanese or Muslim languages =). Nagasaku’s adventure takes her to the far west side of Africa to the region of Morocco where she is set to learn much more about the women who live there and Morocco is largely a Muslim community and it’s a most unique place as women there must hide their beauty as veils are worn in the main cities while wearing loose fitting clothing is practiced with women’s hands being their main focal point of beautifying oneself  in public. Nagasaku Hiromi comes to stay with a Muslim family and she truly becomes a part of their family in learning their daily ways of life including customs, chores, staples, mannerisms, clothing, meal preparation, household upkeep, and really just about every imaginable aspect of female life in this far away country. It’s eye opening as women are largely kept away from many of society’s activities which most of us take for granted in our ways of life and an early cute moment occurs when Nagasaku~san is revealed to have brought with her a strictly prohibited item lol =O! It’s amazing how much is asked of the female population there as no doubt Nagasaku~san worked extremely hard in her visit as she learned much more than one’s daily chores around the home. Another memorable and most cute moment occurs with a play on the household’s mother’s name which is “Bia” only to have Nagasaku~san think it to sound very much like the Japanese pronunciation of the word “beer” =D!

“Encounters” utilizes a panel of studio regulars whom discuss the celebrities visit to the foreign country through the ongoing dialogs of the visit’s video footage as the host poses a number of questions based on the culture being explored where the panel is then asked to answer them just before the answers are revealed for the first time. For the initial question let’s just say that it’s most interesting to learn how jeans are chosen as good fits for oneself as there are no dressing rooms there and customers are absolutely not allowed to try them on at any time….and you just can’t imagine how this is figured out there and you’ll just have to watch the program to learn that answer along with an array of other most eye opening topics which cover a pretty wide aspect of life in Morocco as experience by Nagasaku Hiromi first hand….all in all a most enlightening program and I must say that Hiromi~chan looks absolutely radiant in Morocco as well as back in the studio!! In closing women’s culture is compared between the vastly different cultures of Morocco and Japan in an ending round table open discussion between the host, panelist and Hiromi~chan.

So here I’ve transferred this episode of “Encounters” from an old VHS of mine to digital format and it came out pretty good I think =)…..enjoy the program!

Nagasaku Hiromi

Nagasaku Hiromi complete discography, albums & singles with promotional single

~My Nagasaku Hiromi complete discography music collection~

I thought this also to be a perfect time to share the complete works of Nagasaku Hiromi’s solo music career as she would go on to release a total of two albums and three singles which coincided during the time of Ribbon’s break up. For additional info, music videos and songs from late 80’s to early 90’s idol group Ribbon you can visit the following post from earlier this year:

~「TGIF!」Idol♥’s unzipped on way back Fridays (Volume 46)

Here are two of Nagasaku Hiromi’s albums along with three of her singles and a rare promotional release. I think you’ll find her style of music to be quite diverse in genre and no doubt her vocals to be absolutely exquisite! One of J-pop’s finest voices for sure and Hiromi’s tone and vocal nuances so uniquely distinct~.

But first here’s a classic performance by Nagasaku Hiromi who was a guest on the Kinki Kids program “Domoto Kyodai” where the live band format atmosphere was always awesome giving new life to many a great songs including this performance of the folk classic “Momen no handkerchief” which has been covered by countless number of artists over the years including H!P too…just found this clip while going through some old discs today!

First, above is a rare promotional single released to promote the arrival of Nagasaku Hiromi’s single “Without You.” I found this in a used record shop years ago and to my surprise it’s in rather good shape and especially considering that the jacket is paper without the usually accompanying plastic inner disc holder.

    • I’m sure if anyone can find a copy of “Here and Now” it’ll be Otokichi =D!

Wasn’t the program so eye opening? I mean aside from the beaming appearance of Nagasaku Hiromi of course who was amazing taking on such an endeavor into such a faraway place and culture. I had watched it years ago one night while I was actively recording it from t.v. onto VHS and still I had forgotten most of the answers to the quiz questions posed from Hiromi~chan’s trip to Morocco. Like how they managed to keep their drinking water cold even in the high heat of the land, so resourceful don’t you think! I still got an amusing kick out of her comments and facial expressions on the all male crowd who’d come to see her arrival in their country =O….and naughty too that she brought that forbidden item into the country lol but at least she didn’t cave and have some of it ^^.

We had just been talking about Hello! Project’s Folk Songs collections and by pure luck I had come across recently an old episode of the Kinki Kid’s show “Domoto Kyodai” on an old computer disc from years ago with Hiromi~chan performing a most familiar folk song in “Momen no handkerchief”, I thought just perfect!! as we both have the Folk Songs collections..what did you think of her performance? Her voice so perfectly tailored for just about any genre of music I think and not just the J-pop and J-rock of Ribbon!

It’s a lovely performance. It might be the recording, but I just wish her voice was a little more in the foreground. But she sings so effortlessly, with a beautiful smile. Regrettable that her solo career was so brief. Does she ever get a chance to sing in her film and TV work? I don’t remember her singing in ‘Funuke…’, although I’d better watch that again and double-check.
On a folk-songs-ish theme, my two Nakazawa Yuko albums have arrived (some things take a couple of weeks to arrive, others up to six; it’s a mystery why). I’ve listened to the first (the second is still sealed!) and truly love it. Great arrangements, and her voice is perfect. Must find the courage to open the second, all-Tsunku album today!

        • The instruments are mixed up a bit too high but usually the performances on Domoto Kyodai are always so perfect…love the atmosphere they achieve in both their live guest performances as well as during their interview corners..really great show. From what I’ve seen of her acting career in both films and t.v. dramas I’m yet to hear her featured with a theme song sadly =(….I just thought about an intense drama series she was in, “Aoi tori” which was a tragic love story also starring ex~idol Suzuki Anne and the incomparable actor Toyokawa Etsushi, if you like Japanese period films then a great one I’d recommend highly would be his samurai period film….

It’s really a memorable film and story. Other samurai period films I’ve loved over the years include: “The Hidden Blade” (English title), “Azumi” (Ueto Aya!!!), “Bushi no ichibun” (Kimura Takuya!!), “Shinobi Heart Under Blade” (Odagiri Joe & Nakama Yukie!!), “Zatoichi” (Beat Takeshi) and “Ichi” (with Ayase Haruka) amongst many others.

Ah you got her enka album too I’m wondering if customs is holding your mail with international origins? =(….love her pop album so much too! Still one of my favorites by Yuko~san has to be her graduation song “Koi no kioku”….found this wonderful OPV and just how it begins with the scene in the stadium just as the original Momusu lineup had met Tsunku’s challenge of selling 50,000 singles all on their own…still brings tears to my eyes and I actually have that event somewhere on disc, so much blood, sweat and tears put into that original project….

Did you get to watch Tsunku’s Asayan program where Momusu was literally created and born from auditions and then his 50,000 single sales challenge? Heike Michiyo was also found in that same audition program too back then…here’s one of those 50,000 singles which Otokichi had in stock back then and I was so amazed that a fan would actually part with it, till this day it still astonishes me….

I love your Ai no tame post. You must be so happy to have that single…I’d not seen the Yuko-san video before. It’s lovely. Thank you for the link. I’ve ‘liked’ that on YouTube so that I can watch it again.
I’ll have to do a ‘five favourite Japanese movies’ post. My favourite of all is one I’ve watched over and over without ever tiring of it. And it lasts just under an hour. That’s the only clue!

            • Thank you~♥, I also have somewhere if I can find it the Asayan coverage that they did back then showing everything the original five went through to sell 50,000 singles on their own..nothing short of remarkable! Someone had consigned their Ai no tane single with the event extras to Otokichi back then and he actually had two copies but one only had the singles without the autographed post card and group photograph. “Koi no kioku” always moves me..so many b-sides are that way, just gems and that song’s just so beautiful lyrically and melodically. I’d love to see your top 5 faves for Japanese films!! Suggestions are always welcome, so many out there to see that i don’t know about =). One of the best epic films I’ve ever watched has to be the Chinese films Red Cliff I & II….I can’t recommend any films any more than these, just perfection ~*….

Nagasaku Hiromi – henceforth known as “Cutie Pie” in my fantasy world.

When she was dancing out in public, they showed all these guys in the surrounding audience with huge SE grins. They were all thinking: “She’s not wearing a head-covering!”.

Denny’s Geography humor: During the intro, the MC made Casablanca references.
If had been me I would have asked her: “Did you see Princess Stephanie?” Then Cutie Pie could give me a “look” to infer – “No, that’s MONACO- you silly, silly boy.”. We would laugh about it later.
    … can’t stop the fantasy machine …

    • U~n Hiromi~chan♥’s so cute in this program! I had that very same thought when I first watched this on t.v., like they were all mesmerized and having an out of body experience! =D Plus she’s so gorgeous that that “may” have been having um other thoughts* I wonder? =P And Denny’s working his magic with one of cinema’s greatest and most memorable films!
