FS4 FOLK SONGS 4

FS4 FOLK SONGS 4 CD

Recently my newfound blogging buddy Philip here at WordPress shared a post on Yuming (Matsutoya Yumi) and while I’ve just three releases by her including two albums and a single, I do love her diverse styles in songwriting as well as her most uniquely memorable voice.

So then I thought of a wonderful release which bridged the idol world right to Yuming as on Hello! Project’s series “Folk Songs” (which btw was a most awesome series of albums featuring countless folk classics and so so many members of H!P getting their folk on!!) with its fourth installment “FS4” had featured none other than Marippe performing one of Yuming’s wonderful songs in “Chuuou Freeway.” The version here is poppy~jazz in its soul making a lovely adaptation to Yuming’s original version which was originally released on her album “14banme no tsuki” which interestingly was released under the name Arai Yumi, and mind you to make this story amusing it was years and I mean many of them had passed along with countless moons that until I eventually realized that Arai Yumi is Matsutoya Yumi, the former being her maiden name which she had used for the final time on the aforementioned album from which this wonderful song was born =D. Arai Yumi = Matsutoya Yumi. Sometimes if you’re me, then it takes awhile longer for things to make sense (*≧∀≦)☆★ ↓!

Anyway, check out this song for sure, it’s one of the great ones and here Marippe definitely does it full justice with her sweet voice~.

~Yaguchi Mari (FS4 version) “Chuuou Freeway”~

Chuuou Freeway
Going through Choufu base heading towards the hills
The twilight dyes and spreads across the front glass
Chuuou Freeway
Grasping onto the handle with one hand, with your shoulder the other
Saying “I love you” but you don’t notice
The wind is too strong

The city lights light up
To us they resemble that of shooting stars
Chuuou Freeway
On our right is the racetrack, the beer factory on the left
This road is like a runway
Connecting to the evening sky

Chuuou Freeway
When we first met I drove a car everyday
But these days it’s been a little cold
If I don’t see you off

The city lights light up
To us they resemble that of shooting stars
Chuuou Freeway
On our right is the racetrack, the beer factory on the left
This road is like a runway
Connecting to the evening sky

Connecting to the evening sky

Connecting to the evening sky

Great post! I love the Folk Songs albums. Singing aside, they really show what a sensitive ear Tsunku has when it comes to handling other people’s music. He’s able to make something completely fresh rather than making do with a mundane arrangement. I love this Yuguchi Mari version. Thank you for sharing!

      • You posted Yuming and immediately I thought “Chuuou Freeway” =P! It’s just that when I first heard Marippe’s version it stuck with me so much and for at least a couple of years I made it a silly point to have this mp3 on board with any disc which accompanied me to and from work and in particular during the going to (work) times when our freeways are pretty empty and open (it’s early morning!!) and just the feeling of this song always made me happy then =). That probably sounds wacky and strange but it was like my driving theme song for quite some time lol =P. Tsunku really had a great series going with his FS projects!! The depth of song choice and artists was impressive no doubt and like you’ve said he’d always made these classics his own by revamping them with a new life all the while keeping each song’s true feeling alive. Did you know that the beer factory and race track spoken of in “Chuuou Freeway” are actually real landmarks in Japan?…that’s so cool!
