We’re now just under 7 hours until the start of the fifth AKB48 General Election results show (Saturday June 8th 5:15 pm Japan time)! Living in Hawaii and with Japan being 19 hours ahead of us here which is a lot that would make the start time to be 10:15 pm HST tonight which works out really well as it’ll not be too late to stay up and reach zombie mode which is never a pretty thing  (_´Д`)ノ..!

This year and if the preliminary results are any indication is sure to be an election of change and luckily a politician didn’t state that as that then would translate into ‘an election of things staying the same’ with special interests and agendas in full order giving the people essentially no change (;゜□゜)。

But really I think a lot of new girls will be making a splash~* on this night and it will be most interesting to see what the numbers tell us in regards to the fans’ collective voices as the votes may be at an all time high this year. Sasshi (my 2nd favorite in a virtual tie with Mayuyu) may indeed be our new center and I’m all for that as even though Yuko is my Oshi she’s been the center so it won’t be devastating in that sense and I just hope that she still ranks in the top 10….pretty pleasssse!

YouTube will be streaming the General Election results show live so I’ll be back here at 10:15 pm (HST) to take in all of the butterflies, tears and results.

Update: I just wanted to add in the final results here today on the morning after.

I got in the video at about 5:00pm (Japan), so it was right before it started. I don’t remember how many people were there already, because I just pressed the POWER button on my laptop and ran to the kitchen. I ran back to my computer when I heard the MC start talking =D and didn’t even think to check the numbers until midway through. When they announced number 1 it was 200k+, pretty good. I love the time difference Brazil has from Japan: I’m exactly 12h early, so it’s easy to calculate (5:00AM!) and usually, these events are late afternoon / night, and that’s early morning here, so I just have to wake up early and I can watch the whole thing. Even if it’s a weekday, I could just go to work after it’s over.

      • Over 200K was amazing!!! The last time I was with so many people invested in the same thing were my two visits to Las Vegas when I got to see the race events there (I believe it was 160k+ for both times) albeit last night was being ‘with’ so many in a purely virtual sense. Still the immenseness of the event says so much with those numbers. Ah that’s so cool!! I’m always having to minus 5 hours but at the same time remember that it’s in the sense of the next day in most cases there depending on the time here.

No limit. The limit is how much YouTube can serve, but it’s YouTube. Even the 200k viewers it got at peak time probably aren’t that much compared to how many worldwide viewers YouTube must be handling all the time.

I thought the members’ entrance in the beginning was so weird, they were going too fast. The MCs couldn’t say the names fast enough, it got out of sync, and I wished they’d just be quiet and give the girls signs with bigger hiragana readings instead.

      Like

      • You know I was realizing that but not readily as i was just looking for familiar faces….agree the signs were probably enough =D. At times too I thought that the play by play guys in the little section on the bottom were sort of speaking at ill times and I couldn’t make out what anyone was saying as it was just a cloud of simultaneous speech xD. Interesting that they even had a foreign voice there too for the commentary and she did say at the very end that it was her very first time witnessing the General Election.

Pretty bad speech though. The MC had to save it, and really, only good thing out of it was his comment of “Eien Pressure” at the end.

      Like

      • I caught that too with the single title reference, I don’t know it seemed like she was out of her element or sorts and when she froze that was awkward. I’m not sure if it was nerves, pressure of the moment but even leading up to her speech she just appeared to be so serious and stiff whenever the cameras flashed her, I mean a lot of the girls are full of butterflies and nerves no doubt and for good reason and yet Paruru didn’t appear very comfortable at all the entire time. Cringe….cringe….and I really like her although Hydeo keeps telling me how she’s adopted to acting like Acchan too much. I don’t see it though and if there’s anyone to inspire to be like it would without doubt be Acchan….not acting like her though but being inspired by her. Strange if someone adopts another person’s personality that way….I wonder if she just didn’t prepare a speech? Now that would be odd and especially knowing that she’d be possibly higher up this year, surely she’d have to prepare one would think.

        Like

        • SagSousuke says:

This wasn’t her acting like Acchan. I don’t remember Acchan having any problems with showing some emotion and looking like she cares about the votes she received. In fact, when I think of Acchan in an election, first thing that comes to mind is her “hate me but don’t hate AKB” speech while crying like Yui.
I can only imagine Paruru had a speech prepared for a position higher than what she got, and zero improvisation skills.

          Like

          • I try to get Hydeo to explain what he means by that whole Acchan thing but he’s not specific so I’m not seeing anything Acchan about her well except for her hairstyle maybe. I wonder if that’s why Paruru looked so frozen? It would make sense and her reaction was more of disappointment in which case that’s a bit of over confidence on her part. I wrote something along the lines of that last night…..like before a girl’s name is announced whether she’s much more appreciative that she’ll rank so high or if she’s dreading being called next as that won’t be as high as she’d hoped. 12th is exceptionally high for a newer girl I think so she should have been ecstatic. Or (gulp) did Paruru actually state that she is the new Acchan during a show or something? I dearly hope not =O.

            Like

            • SagSousuke says:

She didn’t say anything like that. Hydeo (and the rest of the wota community) means that Paruru looks like she’s bored all the time. You know, that line of criticism that Acchan always had. Paruru is particularly well known for not always being very enthusiastic to meet fans in handshake events, which as far as every comment I’ve ever heard from people who met her seems to be true. I never heard THAT one from Acchan. I guess I never saw the point of all the criticisms for Acchan, but I do see them in Paruru, so I don’t know what to think about her. What saves her for me is that she doesn’t look overconfident at all. Put overconfidence with her attitude and you’ve got someone who is taking a pretty good situation for granted, and that’d put her right at the bottom of the list for me. But instead of overconfident, I feel she’s always afraid. Like a deer in headlights. That’s why I liked the “Eien no Pressure” comment from the MC; to me, that song is Paruru, and it worked perfectly with her not knowing what to say in her speech.

              Like

              • Oh it’s the uninterested look she shows, I wonder if she’s doing that with some purpose or if it’s actually her real personality? Hydeo believes that it’s not her true personality and now I know what he means (he just never explains things clearly sometimes xD) and I don’t know if she suddenly turned on that bored aura but that’s the Acchan connection. Thank goodness it isn’t anything deep from Acchan which Paruru is possibly consciously emulating if she’s even doing that on purpose for that matter as I don’t see any Acchan in her at all save for this uninterested/unfazed aura. Could be that’s who she really is?….it’s difficult to be absolutely convinced as she’s shown more emotion in the past and actually cried before but that was really before she won the janken tournament and in last year’s elections she showed no real emotion either which is a bit odd for such a young girl. Her Janken won her the center and I really loved that release so much and the whole pv was just perfect I thought too. Paruru may need to go to human emotional therapy I wonder lol =P. I just hope that Paruru doesn’t believe that she’s being cool by having that no emotion auru about her as if to say I know I deserve all of this…that would be awfully disappointing and I may actually begin to not like her anymore =/.

      • Maybe for Paruru making Senbatsu this year was too soon I wonder? It’s like after the janken tournament she rose to the center of attention so quickly and maybe it’s been a bit too quick for her youth to deal with.

I’m going to miss Tomochin =(, She’s such a unique member in the mix, I mean she immediately stands out no matter what the venue or event. Her last solo single may be an indication that she may be looking towards an Amuro~like style if she so continues with music I wonder?

        Like

        • SagSousuke says:

Sure. She was always compared to Amuro… actually, I guess that`s since she transformed from her Tsuji-like childhood form into her current appearance years ago. Which just reminds me she’s the one who changed the most. If I ever go back to see old AKB videos, I’ll be paying attention to her transformation because when I think about it now, it just seems so sudden. I can’t really remember the middle ground since the two “extremes” left such a strong impression =P But yeah, she’ll follow Amuro, and that’s exactly what she always said she wanted, so I’m glad for her.

          Like

          • I was specifically thinking about the musical styles of her solo singles with the Amuro~chan comparison. Physically yes she’s definitely got that happening and has for a long time…I remember when I first posted up the very first appearances of AKB48 in those older issues of UTB, I believe it was you whom pointed out Tomochin as she’s totally unrecognizable to the Tomochin of today…I still can’t get over how different she looked back then…she was Nono’s twin sister =D.

It’s just that the preliminary results which was such a tease to see them so early on and yet I read into those results perhaps a little too much (aside from Sasshi though) and with Yuko falling to third in those results behind Mayuyu it just felt like a change was going to happen….like where’s that crazy guy who voted for Yuko like a zillion times all by himself go?? Help wild wota with lots of money to spend on Yuko’s behalf =P!!! And then at times I would wonder if she’d fall even further down as I always hear and more so now others on threads talking about how they wish she’d ‘graduate already’ and that she’s been there ‘too long’…..but I know they’re not the collective voice out there for Yuko and those are just factions here and there. And what if Yuko decides or AkiP decides that she should graduate…possibly next election night? For her to graduate and not be the center would be a lot hurtful, not sure how I would deal with that. I sometimes gauge the number of comments too on her blog which she regularly updates…love that she writes so much and if the comments total is down it also would make me worry leading up to this year’s election…silly I know (-∀-`)。I don’t know if I ever said this here but a large reason of why I gravitated towards Yuko (after seeing her interact for awhile) is how she’s so much not a me person, she’s always thinking of those around her and isn’t focused on herself solely. She’s a giver….love~advice~friendship~help and reading her blog you can sense it even more of how she’s always speaking about others and supporting them much more than herself. Yuko’s such a nurturing person…she’s going to be the most perfect mom one day! Or if she really does like girls…well you never know lol I’m kidding =P! Kidding….! Hmm (。ーωー。)笑。

And Mayuyu…well she’s a force of nature….beautiful/talented/adorable nature that is so surely she must rise ne~.

Management tried to put Sasshi down? Really? AkiP and management put Hirajima Natsumi down, and she ranked in, and that was the message to them if there was any in this election. But Sasshi’s scandal amounted to nothing in the end. I’m not saying I wish she were punished, just pointing out that she wasn’t. The only thing that changed for her back then was her move to HKT, which was GREAT for her, and considering how many similar moves were announced a bit later, probably planned ahead anyway.

      • I guess when it first occurred her move to HKT48 felt like an exile….time has proven that so incorrect and Sasshi is truly better off being there and they’re prospering with her lead and presence no doubt….but even with her second ‘solo’ single didn’t that feel like a sort of slap in the face with Anrire (at first I didn’t feel this way as I do adore the Ri for Ricchan part of the trio though) moving in on her there…like it wasn’t such a solo release after all. I’m all for promoting other girls and going with Sasshi has great potential for that but that was a bit much I thought and especially with versions of the pv where Sasshi isn’t even the center =(.

        • SagSousuke says:

Hum, I don’t think I saw the PVs, only performances on TV shows. Anrire wasn’t about promoting new members, although it might’ve done that, it was all a joke on Sasshi. I loved Anrire’s AKBINGO performance, it was so well done, the camera kept cutting Sasshi off after just a glimpse of her =p so well done. And even today, after she won the highest honors, everyone was joking about how Sasshi wasn’t the one they expected to defeat Yuko =D You have to understand that Sasshi is AKB’s answer to Yasuda Kei (and the MC guy from her old TV show is her Takasan, loved them). Except that she gets the treatment she deserves, unlike poor Yasuda who was pretty much ignored outside of Hello! Morning and Utaban.

          • And that’s why it pays to see the t.v. appearances xD!! I was so invested in watching everything possible from Hello!Project/Momusu back in those days but I just haven’t had enough time to experience AKB in that same way =/. I never got that and just from the outside of those singles I was puzzled as to why Sasshi was with a trio suddenly. Okay it makes 100% sense now, thank you! I see how she’s made fun of a lot but if it’s in the Kei region that’s an entirely new level =O. I live in a bubble for a lot of the time and with AKB48 they have just so many things going on that it’s difficult to keep up. When she won Yuko did jab her a bit joking but that was so Yuko so I didn’t know the vastness of that type of jabbing this is all so funny…..Sasshi/ Kei her lovable ways just went up two~fold if that’s even possible =D. Your analogy speaks volumes…I totally get it now ^^. Those Utaban/Momusu episodes are legendary, miss seeing Takasan I don’t get to see their program anymore =(. He is the ultimate prankster/joker ever so so brilliant and his timing is impeccable. Even with Arashi he would do the very same thing but it was Nakai~kun whom he’d go after whispering ‘things’ to one of the boys each time just waiting for Nakai~kun to explode and in many cases charge!!! =D On a random recollection, do you remember the time Takasan was the air guy and the Momusu girls were tied to these ridiculously giant balloons which would inflate during a game they were playing every time they ‘lost’ haha that was so mean and yet so funny, just remember Rikachan being so terrified like no other!! Good times.

Unfortunately you’re not losing anything anymore, Utaban ended long ago. They had another program that substituted it for a while but it wasn’t that good, and that ended as well. But indeed, those episodes are legendary. They had running gags with pretty much every regular Oricon charting group. With Arashi they had Takasan whispering things for Ono to say to Nakai-kun, and then Nakai-kun would charge on him and the other Arashi members stopped him. With SMAP, they always had game competitions, and kept score of them since the very first SMAP appearance in the show. And there was so much with Hello! Project, as you know. I liked the MiniMoni tradition of Takasan learning the childish dance moves, those were always fun. They used the same thing with Perfume. Gackt appearances were GREAT, because Gackt. I didn’t like Gackt from music alone, but I loved the talk parts in Utaban, and their tradition was to have the whole studio decorated in Gackt fashion, with skulls and candles all around. And they (both! Nakai-kun was really inspired in the Gackt episodes for some reason) knew how to work so well with Gackt’s over the top superhuman gothic vampire-like image in how they’d let him run wild while describing how he doesn’t sleep or got a new fountain for his bedroom or whatever nonsense, and then would keep asking for details at the same time they had a “stop fooling us” kind of tone… I loved Utaban.

I don’t know if I’d say Yasuda-level, Yasuda is a high standard =P It sure is her acknowledged character in AKB. The no good one. “Hetare” character. But everybody still loves her anyway. I think it started when she gave up bungee jumping on a Shukan AKB episode long ago, and then gave up again in a second try, and I think there was even a third? Anyway, at least twice, and she never jumped. Then the MCs started making fun of her in that show, and somehow by the time her TV show started, it was already established that she was the target of all AKB jokes =D and by the end of that show, that was the natural order of things.

              Like

              • I remember you telling me that here and that they had a new show in its place but I never got to watch it even once. Sad that they tried to ‘fix’ something that wasn’t ever broken. Utaban’s format was the best period!! Utaban really made Momusu Momusu back then and they played probably the biggest role I’ve ever witnessed any show having on a group, no question. The timing was perfect and every time they were on you were just waiting for the magic to happen because it was all planned and it was all coming for sure!! We used to be able to rent Utaban episodes from one of our local Japanese video stores…on VHS back then lol XD. We’d dub them and share them with our circle of friends, never a bad episode that I’ve ever watched..just always so entertaining. Nakai~kun much like he is on their Bistro is a natural host and Takasan was the ultimate wing man for him, their chemistry and how they inevitably built up chemistry with each and every returning/regular guest was amazing to watch over several episodes. R.I.P. Utaban and other show whatever your name was =(. That’s right it was Riida whom would play along with Takasan in driving Nakai~kun humorously mad =D! The Minimoni dances!!! Takasan was always such a screwball going into them lol…yes Utaban was the best!! We had Utaban and Hello!Morning back then, great memories for sure! I still have all of those Hello!Morning episodes on stacks of discs in storage…my only real weekly idol program watching I ever did. I would love to watch more of the AKB shows but I just don’t seem to have the time so I more or less live off of their commercial releases….my bubble world. I didn’t get to see Gackt’s appearances on Utaban unfortunately, that sounds so great and funny! And to even custom their set how awesome….lol @ the whole Gackt aura taking the boys in too =D!

Thank you for explaining the origins of the Sasshi/kei reign, with Kei it was indeed such an exceptional level of making fun of that it would be hard to top lol =P! You know my falling for Sasshi came from such a different sense and me not knowing any of this has added an entirely new dimension to that love now. I do see her being a target of mischief and jokes at times but just not on the level that a program would bring and while I may not watch the shows it does bring a new appreciation for all of the jabbing she receives from fellow members…it’s always the behind the scenes stuff that has such gems too like back stage and the like and happily they do include those segments in some of their concert releases for the bubble in me ^^.

Hum… It does make sense you wouldn’t know if you haven’t seen the TV show. You see, the whole concept of Sashiko no Kuseni was that Sasshi was a bad idol in need of training. Every episode was about her trying out some challenge and failing at it. In most of the episodes they’d bring someone to teach her one or other thing, and they had everything from genius child actress to that amazing food reporter (you know who I’m talking about) to the “reaction variety” Dachou Club trio (especialized in eating very hot things and/or jumping into boiling and freezing water in quick succession). And then Sasshi would get some advice and try the things herself, failing completely. And the host made fun of her. Great show.

Interesting, my bubble works the opposite way, I’m much more likely to only watch the TV shows.

                  • That makes it even more ironic and all of the gasps and shocked reactions from last night that much more deep while some may have been indeed shocked to see Sasshi beat Yuko the wota in the audience were most likely thinking collectively that the girl whom is deemed to be such a failure in the past is now the overlord of the entire idol world =D. That’s so funny that they created a special program just for her with that purpose lol! U~n I actually do know =P, she’s been through so much. You know in some of her interviews she’s brought up times from her past and how it’s gotten her to now sort of like building blocks for success/ happiness but it would be funny if she’d mention this program. Sasshi is so easy to root for, every thing about her really does.

So maybe together we can rule the world like Pinky & the Brain, of course you’ll be the brain while I’ll be aloof 笑!

                    • Haha that was exactly the face of wt~heck just happened here (・o・)?!? In hindsight for me, Sasshi really needed to win this. It’s for the better of AKB48 and for the 48 family as a whole, I mean Yuko would be equally great as the center as she has been before but in a time of so much going on with idols in general having Sasshi as the center will only strengthen the fan/48 love affair further and it’ll get a huge lift with all that only Sasshi can offer as the new face of the franchise. The new single just went up for pre~order yesterday but there’s no rush for me as the limited editions include a handshake event ticket which will only sadden me if I had one as I wouldn’t be able to travel to Japan at this time and shake hands with Yuko….well actually I mean tackle Yuko and hug her and*..and then be removed by security banned forever xD.

Ohh I’m so happy you know the Brain series \(^o^)/ ☆!!!I still have their theme song forever imprinted on my brain. Of course you know that our adventures will inevitably fail before each ending as I find a way to mess things up as only I can =P.

I like Mayuyu, but I think she’s high enough already. And I definitely don’t want her center. Strange as it might be to say this, but I think she’s too much of an idol to be AKB center. Mayuyu has a very classical idol image to her, which is all great and I like, but that’s not what I think AKB is about, and I’d rather have Mayuyu in a good position but someone else more representative of the group in center. That could be Yuko or Sasshi, either way works.

Easy and quick way to sound intelligent. It’s a sure bet that it’s going to fall eventually, might as well shout it out every single time and one day you’ll nail it. It’s just how hype works: lots of people wanting something to say, few people who have anything to say to start with, meaning the majority just picks up on whatever the general mood is. And when you’re 1st, you can only go down, so the mood is continuous doom. Don’t worry, it doesn’t really mean anything, same people saying it’ll die keep buying singles anyway. I immediately think of the PC market, which has been dying for the last 10 years at least according to all the industry analysts AND any random guy at random bar… except that it remains strong as ever.
