Happy Friday っo(*´∀｀)o！
(well actually this is being posted late but I’m editing the date to be yesterday)
For tonight’s Unzipped♥ we’ll take a peek into the deep past as seen through the eyes of Showa era Japanese poet, writer and geologist Miyazawa Kenji who’s birthplace of Iwata became his inspiration for Ihatov, a created name for the beauty of the lands in which he was raised. Hanamaki, now an established landmark in Japan for its scenic beauty, here through the photographic interpretations of Inomoto Koji are made into this wonderfully creative photo book for idol/pop artist Mochida Maki. This photo book is really like nothing I’ve seen elsewhere as it entails a grand scheme of extensive concept planning, image work as well as art direction all bringing to life the lands brought to prominence largely by the author Miyazawa Kenji during the early 20th century.
Iwata sits nearby to the northern coast of Japan’s main land mass and for this photo book Inomoto Koji photographed Mochida Maki in specific places named by the late Miyazawa Kenji through his works of Ihatov and you’ll notice a bit of surreal imagery as well as a dense contrast between shadow and light often times aided by post editing magic throughout creating a modern visionary for these highly celebrated lands known for their great natural ambiance and beauty. You’ll notice too that many borders of these photos have a bit of a abstract quality to them as I’ve kept some from cropping whilst I scanned them just today.
As with numerous long out of print books, I discovered Mochida Maki’s “Ihatov” shashinshuu upon the shelf of a second hand book store here many years ago while perusing for anything interesting which caught my attention and it’s in really pristine condition as its previous owner must have surely enjoyed it and kept it from harms way for all these years since its publishing. Again, the photography and creative efforts put forth for this photo collection are unique in nature while being of the most imaginative sorts, much different from the standards of most typical photo books of today. Each photo here taking full advantage of the surroundings and light with wonderful attention to detail, oh! and yes! one Mochida Maki so beautifully photographed here too!
