Rafa vs. Fed….history and a rivalry renewed

We’re now just a few short hours before they take center court and with Hawaii time being a bit odd in terms of hoping~* to witness history take place on hallowed ground once again live….I can only wonder if I’ll be awake at such an hour in the earrrrrly morning ( 」´0`)」...!!!

And thank goodness for rivalries~. They keep us forever intrigued in sports and while they can turn fleeting in an instant we surely must cherish these moments~* of greatness and it was almost unexpected that we’d see the rivalry renewed between Rafa and the Fed on the dark red clay @ legendary Roland Garros~ this year. I mean with the incredible winning streak dating back to last year by Novak Djokovic where he seemed on track to match and then possibly overtake one Johnny Mac’s record consecutive match winning streak set way~back~when~, it all ended and abruptly at the unlikely hands and racquet of one all~time~winningest Grand Slam champion so it had appeared that a Rafa vs. Fed final was all but a dream~*. And to think Fed was flying “under the radar” over the past two weeks, his weakest surface being the red clay although he’s proven successful in the past it’s still one Rafa who’s winning record @ Roland Garros’ stands at a jaw dropping 44~1 who’s truly the achilles~heel whom all but owns the Fed whenever they’ve met at this storied venue~ deemed one of the toughest to tame….(note all of the legendary champions who’ve never won there.) Rafa now poised to possibly match one Bjon Borg’s long standing record of 6 straight while not consecutively still most impressive~ on a surface which always tests and has denied so many. This will be the fourth time that Rafa and Fed will meet at Roland Garros in the final with Rafa winning every meeting in dominating fashion their last meeting there being a 1~3~0 straight set victory but this year we’re witnessing a rebirth of sorts from Fed and so their rivalry appears to be renewed within perfect circumstances and timing with their level of play leading us to a possible classic for the ages and a beautiful battle of wits and guts at their very best~.

Rivalries do turn fleeting, so let’s breath in and enjoy and appreciate all that the Rafa vs. Fed match~up has brought to us over the years and what it’ll surely bring to us in just a few short hours as tennis history awaits ^ ^.

  1. Reminds me of the glory days of tennis with the rivalry between Borg & McEnroe – I’ve actually got their glorious matche from 1980 on DVD. I love tennis, and personally I will be rooting for Nadal, but I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting match no matter who wins. I was so thrilled to see Li become the first Asian player to win the French Open yesterday. Anyway, enjoy the match, MB.

    • I’ve read about that match and you often hear commentators make reference to just how epic it was…..so happy you’re a tennis fan too! A~h! that was amazing yesterday with Li Na winning!!

  2. Just waking up…..it’s match on and no rain!!! It’s just past 4 am, minds a bit fuzzy but I so didn’t want to miss any of this! Good morning ^ ^.

Odd to think of Federer as the underdog but on clay he surely is. Thought I’d blog while watching…..

  3. I love that about clay…you can always check the mark on any shot. First game to Federer as he serve & volleys.

  4. Federer breaks first on his fourth break~point chance…..both are striking the ball well but Federer looks a bit more comfortable so far.

  5. 3~love lead as Federer nearly holds at love. It’s only just begun but he’s looking very confident.

  6. Mary Carillo just said that Li Na now has 2 million followers on Twitter….that’s so awesome! She was a popular figure in China before…now of legendary status =).

Federer still hasn’t faced a break~point and is holding much easier than Rafa so far….now leads 5~2. I hope Rafa isn’t injured in any way….a trainer has come out. Okay just retaping I think he’s fine =).

  7. Nadal hits a wicked cross court shot to hold…..fights off one set point as a Federer drop shot falls just wide. Now Federer serves at 5~3. Still seems the more aggressive of the two.

  8. Now having green tea for breakfast…still too early for actual food I think =).

Not so fast….Nadal gets his first break~point chance at 30~40. What a get!!!! Nadal stretched wide hits a wicked cross court angle at Federer who dumps his volley into the net! Back on serve =).

  9. Nadal’s come to life!!! Both wings and in particular his forehand is punishing Federer! The immense spin off his racquet are like no one else’s….now Federer faces break point. omg dropper vs. dropper and then an amazing cross court put away at the net! Break point again….second serve….Nadal now ahead 6~5 and will serve for the 1st set. Amazing how quickly things can change!

  10. 25th meeting overall…9th for a major championship. Forehand winner gets the 1st set for Nadal…..he’s now won the last four games. Federer needs to let go of the disappointment of letting that first set get away quickly.

  11. Ever notice how Nadal always pulls his shorts away/out (hoping for away xD) of his butt between points?? I know all player have their routines….but……butt :P.

Federer looks a bit rattled now missing first serves and it looks like Nadal is firmly in his head.

  12. Federer holds for 2~3 still down one break and almost went down two breaks in the last game. Johnny Mac brings up a good point that maybe his emotional win over Djokovic took something out of him….or maybe it’s the relentless play of Nadal disheartening him as he just doesn’t look like the same player at the start of this match.

    A big moment…..Federer gets to deuce from down love~40 on Nadal’s serve…

  13. Nadal quickly ends any hope of breaking back. 4~2 Nadal. I’ve always wondered what it feels like playing on clay…to slide and just how the ball bounces so differently. Between grass and clay I’d choose clay first I think.

  14. Dynamic ball striking by both players and Federer earns another break chance….on his third break chance Federer breaks back……back on serve and the crowd comes to life again =)!

  15. Match is now 1 hour 49 minutes old. Rafa breaks back….Federer who’s usually so stoic and silent even let’s out an audible sigh of displeasure.

  16. Rain delay…big drops but blue skies are nearby so it may pass quickly. Nadal leads 5~4 serving at deuce. Maybe this break can give Federer time to regroup and think strategy I wonder?

  17. I totally agree with the commentary that even after a rather short 9 minute rain delay they should have still warmed up for a bit and allowed the fans to get reseated but after maybe a first shaky looking point from Federer both seem ready as Federer gains a couple more break chances and breaks back to even the second set at 5~all.

One of the most difficult shots in tennis….a backhand volley helps Federer to hold at love for a 6~5 lead =).

  18. The rain on the clay also is keeping the ball down lower on bounces which appears to help Federer.

    Now heading into a tiebreak….

    Like

  19. Tense tiebreak as Nadal dominates for a 4~love lead….Federer storms back to 4~2. Nadal takes a two set to none lead…..it’s not looking good for Federer to come back against arguably the best clay court player ever.

  20. After trading breaks in the third Federer breaks Nadal a second time nearly at love for a 6~5 lead pushing for a fourth set…..he looks a bit fresher now too!

  21. I find the very pro~Federer crowd interesting too as maybe the French have seen Nadal win too much there? The same feeling was present at his Djokovic match where the crowd was firmly behind the Swedish champion.

Federer now with 3 set points.

Federer takes us to a fourth…it’s not over yet!!

  22. Nadal now cruising up two breaks in the fourth serving for his sixth French Open championship~ up 5~1. Amazing defensive turned into offense from the Spaniard and Federer has no answer….you can hear them etching Rafa’s name upon the trophy…

  23. While it’s been Federer’s most competitive match at Roland Garros versus Rafa the script still remains the same. Now at triple championship point.

Game. Set. Match. Championship. Rafa gets his 6th!!

Now it’s off to Kansas from France…… =)

  24. A final thought. While Federer has the most grand slam titles and has captured them all for a career slam his nemesis in Rafa for the most of their rivalry has gotten the very best of him….so is Federer really the greatest of all time? Or could Rafa make a statement for that stature? He’s dominated Federer and owns a dominant winning record against him so where does that leave the greatest of all time argument going forward from here as Rafa’s still got many potential years ahead of him to chase down Federer’s record Grand Slam titles record?

    • What a fantastic commentary, MB!! I knew you had great talent!!! I actually set my sky box recorder for the match because I went to a South East Asian event that day. I was praying I wouldn’t hear the results before I watched it back. Fortunately no one at the event mentioned it. The match was fantastic – but then, we don’t expect anything less from these two tennis legends. Rafa took a while to get into the match, but like a true pro he came back to take the glory 🙂 I was up till about midnight by the time it was over. I was so tired from the vent I could hardly keep my eyes opened. But I stayed awake until the very end.!!
