catch 22

And now I’ve learned what’s wrong. Windows Vista is in need of an update because right now Vista is seeing my internet connection as ‘unidentified’ so Vista’sa own security is now blocking my internet connection…..so I’ll need to update Vista with a download only problem is that Vista won’t let my internet connection work so I’m unable to download the microsoft fix patch and that’s the sad state of things. I also purchased al of my hardware to be compatible with Vista so if I then got Windows 7 nothing else would work…this is bad!!

I don’t know what to do now as I can’t get the Vista update to fix things. I really don’t like Vista but I’m stuck with it it seems =(. Please send help!…..or maybe this is God’s way of telling me that I spend too much time on the internet I wonder?

I’m going to watch Perfect Blue now….a friend returned it today and I didn’t think she’d have it this long. I’ll miss being on WordPress.

Try downloading the update on another computer (right click+save file as and save it somewhere on the computer), transferring it to a flash drive, and then putting it on your computer?

    • From what tech tells me my pc woul
d normally identify which updates I need but without being able to log onto the internet with my laptop I can’t tell which update(s) are needed =(. I wonder if I could ask someone to downlod them all but that may be too much to impose xD…

Maybe your tech would be able to figure out which one you need, then? I don’t have Vista, so I wouldn’t know anything 😦

On the Microsoft website there should be descriptions for updates, but yeah, generally Windows products rely on the update software to update itself… hm.

Okay, after a quick search, it turns out this is a common problem that occurs if you have two firewalls on. Do you have an anti-virus program like Norton or McAfee installed and running on your computer? Disable Windows Firewall on your computer, and you should be able to connect to the internet…

        • I have Norton running but I’m always told to never turn it off although now that I have no internet those awful people/things that make that protection necessary have no access either……….

It’s still responding as if Vista were not allowing my browser to work =(. I don’t know how to identify which update is needed……if only I personally knew Bill Gates =P.

So you do have a firewall… perhaps you enabled Windows firewall when you started your computer? If so, the problem is that they’re blocking each other (or something like that) and you need to disable Windows Firewall. Try searching your computer for it and disabling the software, or making an exception for the software on Norton’s software.

If you already did that then I don’t know how else to help you :/

            • Thank you…I’d place a heart there but I don’t know how to do so on a cell keyboard =(. It sadly doesn’t appear to be my firewall causing it and it seems to be Vista alone? I would periodically get those pop up notifications about updates for Windows but it seems that I must have missed an update =(. Thank you again so much for helping me! I can smile now even though I can’t get to my email or blog =) <3. A-h there I've found a heart ^ ^.

If it works in Windows Vista, it should work in Windows 7. They’re core is identical. The only difference is that 7 has less fat included and was already released on top of some years worth of patches/driver updates (that were developed for Vista), so it had better support for hardware from the beginning and got a good reputation. But they’re pretty much the same system.

I’ve just read the three posts and I’m a bit confused as to what you’re doing… From what I understand, you’ve talked to someone on the phone, was that someone from your ISP or a PC technician? And then you had someone see your laptop and they tried changing the ethernet cable? What else did they do? I have to say your tech support is useless if they left you alone just telling you to update your computer to see if it’s fixed, that’s their job. Especially considering how there’s no way you can do it yourself with just your non-connected laptop. Anyway, try borrowing someone’s laptop / inviting someone with a laptop for lunch and testing to see if you can connect from theirs. That will tell you if the problem is really with your laptop. If it isn’t you call the ISP and get them to send a technician to your house to check your Internet installation instead of your laptop (I don’t know if you have ADSL (phone line), cable, whatever). If it is your laptop, you have to get someone else to fix it because there’s nothing that you can do if you don’t have access to a connection. Oh, and I find it unlikely that you’re missing a Windows Update. I couldn’t find any updates related to Internet connectivity released at least since a week ago, didn’t look further back (there are lots of them…) In any case, you wouldn’t need an update to make something that already worked start working again. It’d be more likely that it was an update that broke it, but again, I didn’t find anything interesting. It sounds more like a virus to me. Your laptop should have a wireless card, so why not try going somewhere with wifi connection and updating there? If the problem was with your Ethernet port, wifi should still work. You could then update everything you want and run your antivirus. Not that Norton will do you any good, but… well, you can always try.

Hum… By the way, what gave you the idea that the problem was that you need to update Windows Vista? Did it start popping up notifications at you saying that you might be insecure? Because it just does that automatically after a few days without being able to check with Microsoft’s service, it doesn’t mean that it found the problem and is offering you the update to solve it.

  3. Sorry these replys are so short…it takes me so much longer to type on a pnone keyboard. He was having me go into all sorts of areas in windows trying to fix it. He said the laptop was fine and that it was Vista blocking my internet….but before he thought the modem’s cable may have gone bad so I got a new one but it didn’t help. I asked a friend to check for a related update but he said that there were too many to know which one I needed so I just got home with Windows 7….I was hesitant to install it because I was thinking that my dvd drive, printer, new scanner and external hd would stop working as they’re for Vista.

Hum… It’s not difficult, but installing an operating system is a bit of work, especially after (when you have to reinstall programs). Keep in mind that it’s not guaranteed that just going to Windows 7 will solve the problem, and if it doesn’t you’ll be stuck with a fresh install of Windows 7 without the possibility of going online and getting programs you generally use; so for example if you’re used to watching stuff on VLC, you won’t be able to install it later, so you’ll be without internet and without movies. Well, 7 comes with Windows Media Player, but I don’t know how good that is. You should be okay with the things you said, but in some laptops you have to download drivers to have every feature and some manufacturers don’t release them for versions of Windows different from the one they’re sold with (in this case I assume Vista). So who knows, a laptop camera might not work, or maybe if you have a multi-touch touchpad it won’t work… I can’t imagine a dvd drive not working, and the rest is external, so no matter. I could look up Windows 7 compatibility for any of these if you tell me the laptop/printer/… model.

Okay the printer is….hp photosmart c4385, scanner is….canoscan lide 210, external hd is…..maxtor 750 gb.

VLC works in anything. I meant that you won’t be able to download it if you find out the connection still won’t work.
I’ll look up the other things.

Oh, I actually don’t know, I’ve never upgraded from on version to another. I always format them and then install the new version from 0 instead of trying to import settings from the previous installation. So I don’t know how smart W7 will be. But you should also install it from 0 in this case, because for all I know, W7 could import your network settings from Vista and also break. But then, if you format Vista and install W7 over it, depending on how your hd was setup by the manufacturer, if your files are placed together with Vista you’ll be formatting them too. So then you’re losing everything not backed up. That’s why I said installing an OS is a bit of work.

Maybe I should get an iphone so I could get my email and things that way and stay offline on my laptop as I could still use the laptop for other things but I could’t post here anymore….which makes me wonder if wp would refund me for my unused upload space.

Why are you giving up already? If I understood what you’ve already done, you didn’t even get a technician to look at this yet. You should be complaining to your Internet provider to send someone to your house and see what’s wrong with your connection, not talking to them on the phone and buying cables yourself. You’re paying them for the service, surely they have to provide it.

I was on the phone for sooooo long with them the past two days and I think one of the guys was getting a bit irritated as I didn’t know what he was talking about sometimes =/.

Printer and scanner work, maxtor 750gb isn’t a model but all the models they have with 750gb work, so that’s okay too.

Hum, I didn’t even think of the region code thing. Doesn’t VLC already do that for you? In any case you can just download and install Any DVD again… as long as you can get connected.

          • A-h that’s so good they’d still work =)!! Hmm I have no idea if vlc would do that for me….i’d need to purchase Any DVD I think.

As you say though this may not work at all and maybe I’ll still not be able to access the internet….

Just confirmed that VLC ignores region code.

Also, I should’ve looked it up before, but from Microsoft’s guide you’ll get an upgrade option that will “preserve your files, settings and programs”. But it doesn’t say what settings are those. If it’ll be importing your network settings, it’s useless.

              • That would be bad =(…Vista is weird as it’s like one day it woke up and just decided that it doesn’t recognize something that’s been there for so long….oh that’s so good that it’ll keep programs and things a-h hopefully pictures too =).

So then i’d still have the same issue…..why does Vista hate me so much :(?

Check the tower? Are you on a radio connection? What’s your internet provider anyway? You should try testing with another computer/laptop in your connection… If it works, it’s no use talking to the provider. You have to send your laptop to repair. Or maybe start choosing between another laptop or an iPhone. But if someone else’s working laptop doesn’t work in your connection, then you have to keep complaining to the Internet provider. It’s not matter of what they want to do, because they never want to do anything. That’s why they ended up doing tech support on the phone. I can’t believe there’s no group of technicians in an ISP to do repair on the network…

  8. Hell Dear,

You are only “stuck” with Vista as long as you continue to use PC’s.
By now I’m sure you have realized tht Microsoft makes inferior products,
which is the other reason (besides innovation) that Apple is now the World’s largest tech company.
