Engrish gone bad…

These are so amusing!….sent from my father, some are really bad though! :O Language editor needed! 😛

Haha is that what they call them overseas?! :O I hope they're as nice inside as the sign promises!

Okay I guess the whole "Uranus" joke never gets old but I think this manufacturer actually doesn't even get the joke themselves!

LOL!…now that's a real shame!….no fun?! Really?! :O

I'm not even sure what this is supposed to mean……. Eh?!

Hmm….poor baby…or is the baby driving?!…in which case this is actually amazing!! 😛

Now something definitely got lost in the translation here!! I wonder where they…..um…allow it?! 😛

Now that's just wrong!!…someone needs to fix this sign for sure!

Awwww…that's so sweet….'treasure' its use….

I guess if you're ever 'stolen' just make sure that you have your cell phone on you! 😛

I'm happy that they emphasized the 'no saliva' part!….don't you just hate it when your friend is talking to you and they accidentally leave your face a little wet?! Someone should print a t-shirt with this on it! 😛

Hmm….I guess if you're going to fall, it should be done with great care!

More falling…….carefully, carefully… 😛

Okay now it's getting really weird!….now why would anyone in their right mind ever do such a thing?!! This is such an odd translation but it gets even…um better just below!

Now this is my favorite Engrish sign….really just cracks me up!! Ah well at least they say 'thanks!' O__o

Apparently the "dying prohibited here" sign isn't actually a mistranslation, it's just a plain weird sign in general 🙂 You might find

  7. That's a really great point you made…as the use English being so widespread certainly adds to the possibilities of such language mishaps but even if I am amused I have to say for the most part it's pretty excusable when you consider it in that context. Still very amusing though! 😛 As long as you listen to the sign, both you and the fish will be okay! 😛

Weird, half of my original comment is missing. There was supposed to be a link to http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=229 where they were discussing that one. I don't understand much Chinese myself. 🙂

  16. I hope no one was offended by these as I've learned that some are actually accurate translations from the Chinese language…still the meaning is strange though but these were just posted as light humor and I hope they're seen that way. ^-^

  19. Thank you nya for reposting it here and I had a chance to read the discussion on it and it's totally unlike what it initially seems or at least seemed to me. Quite a witty and interesting sign actually once you get an explanation of its meaning and its location. ^-^

Maybe it's an accurate translation, but it was translated to inform English speakers, right? Not much help if you are scratching your head, or laughing so hard that you *do* fall in the pond! 😛 All these kinda' things go around the Internet all the time, and especially business types pass them around. I don't think many would be offended! Especially when it's there to see in the picture. Maybe the Chinese have collections of bad English to Chinese translations!! :PBet this post went a lot further than you ever thought it would! Glad you and Kat hooked up! 🙂

I've never actually seen the video online, just lots and lots of screenshots. The site where I found them has been taken down so I'm not sure where you might be able to find them now, although I did find one by searching Google images:http://www.xeni.net/images/boingboing/tt.jpg

  23. I bet you're right!….there must be a reverse thing happening where they're laughing at us too! 🙂 Really that's so true…this post was just some light hearted humor I thought, passing on something that I received and I actually didn't think that there'd be any comments on this one. 😛 Haha silly me!

  24. Aw I wish they were still around! One of my favorite LOTR clips that I love to watch which cracks me up endlessly is the "They're taking the Hobbits to Eisengard" which a friend sent to me awhile back. The look on Viggo's face is priceless at one point in this fan made clip and Gollum…..^-^ I'll post the clip here just in case you haven't watched it yet. 🙂

Hard to predict how popular a post will be! But you got to meet some other Voxer's that way. so it's all good! :)And there's over 1.3 billion Chinese to laugh at us! ^^ But Chinese speak many languages, so they have some translation issues too, I bet. I know single people that speak Mandarin, Cantonese (southern China, including Hong Kong) and so many others. One is even learning Japanese too!Mainlanders make fun of people from Taiwan, because their Mandarin is "too formal" like in the movie Perhaps Love… I just read that Hong Kong is easing off the rule that almost all state schools must teach in Cantonese. This was largely done to show independence from China (Mandarin) and the former English colonialists, but all the really smart and practical HK parents know that command of English is super-important to success these days, so the government has relented. Now any school can teach in English if they choose. That was a problem before – even "English" schools mostly taught in Cantonese… adding to Engrish, no doubt! 🙂
