Tony Stewart wins at Chicagoland Speedway!

Tony Stewart got his first win of the season snapping his winless streak which goes back to last season's race at Texas Motor Speedway. NASCAR's Cup Series visits Chicagoland Speedway only once a season and the racing here has always been great to watch. This track is 1.5 miles with 18 degrees of banking in the turns which translates into really high speeds getting into the corners and by the time the Cup Series races on Sunday the rubber laid out on the track helps to create a 3rd high groove up against the wall which many drivers opted to use. While Stewart was strong throughout the race especially after gaining track position with great pit stops and strategy it was Jimmie Johnson who looked to be the class of the field. But late in the race Johnson had a rear tire explode sending him hard into the outside wall ending his day. Johnson had been up front for most of the race and even worked his way from ninth back to the front under green flag conditions after various pit strategies by other teams pushed him a few spots back. Johnson who ended up finishing 36th dropped to 7th in the points standings and is now 477 points behind Jeff Gordon who finished in the 11th spot and is still leading the points race. This season it seems that even when Jeff Gordon has a bad day he still manages a decent finish and that was the case yesterday and while 11th isn't great it's still an okay finishing spot. Congratulations to Tony Stewart on his win and this may be the start of his season turning around a bit. While Stewart hasn't finished poorly this is definitely quite deep into the season for him to be getting his first win of the season. Stewart is known to run better in the second half of the season and this win might just provide the momentum that he needs. The Cup Series is off next weekend. Even NASCAR drivers deserve a week off with their season being the longest of any American sport. Next race is at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway often called the Brickyard for the Allstate 400. Next to the Daytona 500 this race is the next most prestigious event that all drivers want to win. Jeff Gordon has the most wins of any active driver at this track with 4 and Jimmie Johnson captured his first win at this famed track last season, a track that he had struggled at previously. I'm really looking forward to it!
